Rafael Devers secured his first home run as a San Francisco Giants player on Saturday in a game against his former team, the Boston Red Sox, at Oracle Park. The milestone came shortly after a tough outing on Friday when he went hitless against the Red Sox, highlighting a quick turnaround for the newly traded slugger.
Previous Struggles Offsetting Breakthrough Performance
In his initial game back facing the Red Sox, Devers experienced a difficult night, going 0-for-5. He was notably denied a potential hit in the third inning by a remarkable defensive play from Ceddane Rafaela. However, Devers demonstrated resilience by following up that night with a powerful home run that cleared the outfield wall, marking a significant moment since his recent trade.
Devers Expresses Confidence and Appreciation After Key Hit
Discussing his performance, Devers shared confidence about his ability to connect solidly with the ball, believing the hit on Saturday would clear the fence after sensing the previous night’s contact would fall short. He stated,
“I kind of knew that the one from last night was not going to go out. I already knew it. But I know, once I hit one like I did today, it is going to go out,”
through Giants interpreter Erwin Higueros following the Giants’ 3-2 victory over Boston.
Devers also acknowledged the enthusiasm of fans on both sides, receiving a standing ovation before his first at-bat and expressing gratitude for the warm reception. He said,
“As we know, San Francisco and Boston have the greatest fans, both,”
and added,
“Now that I’m on this side, I really do appreciate how they have received me. But let’s not forget how good the fans in Boston are too.”
Trade Details and Future Expectations with the Giants
The Giants acquired Devers from the Red Sox as part of a significant trade involving pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, along with prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello. Following the trade, Devers explained that he felt a sense of relief and contentment, describing his mindset as “happy” and “relaxed” after parting ways with Boston amid a strained relationship.
As the Giants continue their season, they are hopeful that Devers’ emerging momentum will contribute to their efforts to challenge the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, for top placement in the NL West division.
