Following a disruptive trade involving Rafael Devers, none of the four new players acquired by the Boston Red Sox have made their debuts yet. However, veteran right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks is expected to return soon. Hicks, sidelined since early June due to toe inflammation, is working toward his comeback with a shift from a starting role to the bullpen, which may accelerate his timeline for rejoining the team.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed Hicks’ changing role and recovery status, saying,
“I mean, obviously the role is different. We don’t have to build him up, but we have to respect the injury, and obviously the arm, that’s the most important thing. So, we’ll see how he feels, and we’re not putting pressure on him. Hey, ‘You’ve got to be here on Friday.’ Whenever he’s ready, he’s ready.”

Rehab Outing Marks First Step Toward Major League Return
Hicks took a significant step toward his Red Sox debut during a recent rehab appearance, pitching two-thirds of an inning. In 23 pitches, he allowed two runs, including a home run, while throwing 10 strikes. Cora hinted there is “a good chance” Hicks could be ready to join the team as early as Friday, reflecting optimism about his progress.
Before the injury, Hicks’ performance as a starter for the San Francisco Giants was uneven, with a 6.47 ERA across nine starts and four relief appearances this season. Still, the Red Sox remain confident in his potential, especially given his success last year as a full-time reliever when he posted a 3.29 ERA. His powerful fastball, which can top 100 mph, is expected to be a valuable asset out of the bullpen.
Team Reshuffling Adds Pressure to Hicks’ Recovery
The Devers trade unsettled the Red Sox roster, and the return of Hicks represents a key piece in stabilizing their pitching staff. Moving Hicks to the bullpen reduces the need for a lengthy buildup typically required for starters, potentially allowing him to contribute sooner, but the team remains cautious to avoid aggravating his injury.
The timing of Hicks’ comeback will be important for the Red Sox as they seek to improve their pitching depth amid ongoing uncertainties. His ability to add velocity and experience from the bullpen could have a notable impact on the team’s performance moving forward.
