Arman Tsarukyan has been named the backup fighter for the main event at UFC 317, a decision that surprised many fans given his recent setbacks. Earlier this year, Tsarukyan missed a chance to compete for the UFC Lightweight Championship after a back injury forced him out just hours before weigh-ins for his rematch with Islam Makhachev. Since then, he has declined a rematch against Mateusz Gamrot and expressed dissatisfaction with UFC matchmakers, fueling speculation about his standing within the promotion. The term “Arman Tsarukyan UFC backup role” now draws both hope and skepticism regarding his future in the organization.
MMA Analyst Din Thomas Sees Backup Position as a Default Option
Din Thomas, a respected UFC analyst and coach, shared his view on Tsarukyan’s current position during an interview with MMAJunkie.com. Thomas suggested this backup role does not necessarily mean Tsarukyan has regained favor with UFC management. Instead, he described it as a consolation prize offered by default.
I don’t think it means he’s out of the dog house,
Thomas said.
I think it means he gets the consolation prize because Justin Gaethje will probably get the next shot, and Justin Gaethje said, ‘I’m not cutting weight to be a backup. I want the title shot.’ And the UFC was like, ‘All right, we’re not going to make you cut weight.’ Because Justin Gaethje should probably be the rightful owner of this position, so I think by default, Arman Tsarukyan was the only guy they could go to for this, and Arman is going to do whatever he can to get himself out of the dog house – had to say yes.

Uncertainty Looms Over Tsarukyan’s Path Forward
If Tsarukyan can make weight and is called upon to fight at UFC 317 due to unexpected circumstances, it may offer him a chance for redemption and a full return to championship contention. However, given his recent injury and withdrawal from significant matchups, questions linger about whether he can avoid another last-minute setback. His status as the No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight is at stake, and how he navigates this backup role could determine the next chapter of his career.
