Clair DeGeorge Signs One-Year Deal with Toronto Sceptres, Aiming to Elevate Her PWHL Impact

The Toronto Sceptres announced on Monday that forward Clair DeGeorge has signed a one-year contract for the upcoming 2024-25 PWHL season. This move brings renewed hope for the player to increase her influence on the ice while contributing to the team’s aspirations. The signing marks another step in DeGeorge’s evolving professional journey and sets the stage for her to take on an expanded role.

DeGeorge’s Professional Journey and Growth Opportunities

Clair DeGeorge, originally from Anchorage, Alaska, has become known as a journey-player within the PWHL’s brief history. She began her career with the Minnesota team during the league’s inaugural season, playing a part in securing the first of Minnesota’s two Walter Cup championships. Most recently, she played a supporting role with the Montreal Victoire alongside prominent players such as Laura Stacey, Jenn Gardiner, and captain Marie-Philip Poulin. Despite a depth role last season, DeGeorge is eager to develop further with Toronto.

“I am excited for the opportunity to develop as a player and experience the electrifying support from Toronto’s fans. I hope to bring not only my love for the game and support for teammates, but to bring my size, speed, and vision on the ice.”

Defensive Strength and PWHL Experience Valued by Sceptres

Though DeGeorge’s offensive statistics have been limited—she has yet to score a goal in 49 regular-season games and none in 11 playoff appearances—her defensive skills are highly regarded. At 26 years old, she has proved reliable in the defensive zone, a quality Toronto’s general manager Gina Kingsbury believes will be crucial for the team.

“Clair is a 200-foot centre that is defensively responsible with some offensive upside,”

Kingsbury said.

She will bring PWHL experience to our lineup, including being a Walter Cup Champion.”

Championship Pedigree and Notable Achievements

Beyond the PWHL, DeGeorge carries an impressive hockey background. She earned gold with Team USA at the 2017 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship and was part of the Ohio State team that won the NCAA championship in 2022. These accomplishments underline her competitive experience and leadership potential, both of which Toronto hopes to harness this season.

Building Team Continuity with Familiar Faces

DeGeorge will join fellow former Montreal Victoire players Elaine Chuli and Claire Dalton, who recently signed with the Sceptres. With these signings, Toronto currently has 11 players under contract out of the 23 allowed through to the 2025-26 season, signaling a steady effort to solidify a competitive roster. The addition of DeGeorge represents a blend of experience and potential as Toronto prepares for the season ahead.
