Javon Kinlaw is embarking on a new chapter in his career with the Washington Commanders, entering a fresh defensive system among new teammates after the team’s recent run to a conference championship. Despite these changes, Kinlaw benefits from reconnecting with defensive line coach Darryl Tapp, a familiar figure from his time with the San Francisco 49ers, which the Commanders expect will accelerate his development and strengthen their defense overall.
How Kinlaw and Tapp’s Past Influences Present Success
Kinlaw was drafted 14th overall by the 49ers in 2020 but struggled early due to injuries, spending two seasons on Injured Reserve and appearing in just 10 games during that span. This limited his ability to grow, and the 49ers declined his fifth-year option. However, when Tapp joined the 49ers’ coaching staff as an assistant defensive line coach in 2021, he eventually worked closely with a fully healthy Kinlaw in 2023. That season, Kinlaw delivered his best performance to date with 25 tackles, six quarterback hits, and a career-high 3.5 sacks, marking his return to form with his first sack in nearly three years.
Tapp described their early working relationship as beginning with Kinlaw being “a puppy,” but now sees him as a more confident player who effectively pressures quarterbacks and stops the run from the interior defensive line.

“He’s doing a lot of big things and really come into his own as far as his play style,”
Tapp said.
Kinlaw’s Enthusiasm for Rejoining Tapp and Embracing the Commanders’ Vision
For Kinlaw, signing with the Commanders was an easy choice, largely because of his renewed partnership with Tapp. He appreciates Tapp’s high-energy coaching style and the dedication he shows to helping players improve and succeed.
“Coming from a guy who actually knows me pretty well, even outside of the game of football, it’s always a beautiful thing,”
Kinlaw said.
“He knows what he’s getting when it comes to me. I’m excited, for sure, because he brings a lot of energy.”
“That’s what you need on them dog days,”
Kinlaw added.
“You need someone that’s gonna help you out.”
Commanders’ Coaching Staff Confident in Kinlaw’s Upward Trajectory
General Manager Adam Peters, a former 49ers executive involved in Kinlaw’s drafting, brought him to Washington. Along with Tapp and head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders’ leadership believes Kinlaw is an ascending talent who will flourish in their system. This confidence echoes past successful bets on players like Frankie Luvu and Dorance Armstrong, who both became key starters after signing with Washington under similar evaluations.
Kinlaw recognizes and values the faith placed in him by his new coaches and is committed to continuing his improvement.
“These people, they believe in me over here,”
Kinlaw said.
“They see the progression. Every year, I’m looking to get better. Every year, I’ve gotten better. I’m gonna continue to get better, and I’m just happy that it’s here that I get to showcase that.”
Looking Ahead for Kinlaw and the Commanders’ Defense
With Kinlaw now healthy and supported by a coaching staff familiar with his strengths, the Commanders aim to leverage his potential to boost their defensive front. His ability to both stop the run and generate pressure from the interior adds a valuable component to their defense going forward. Kinlaw’s return to form also provides hope for sustained impact beyond his initial setbacks.
The reunion with Darryl Tapp not only rejuvenates Kinlaw’s career but also highlights the Commanders’ strategic approach to building their roster through trusted relationships and player development, aiming for continued success after their recent conference championship appearance.
