Marc-André Fleury, longtime friend and teammate of Sidney Crosby, shared his thoughts on rumors linking the Penguins star to the Montreal Canadiens. With two years remaining on an $8.7 million contract, Crosby’s future has sparked debate after Pittsburgh finished near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division this season.
Fleury expressed that Crosby ultimately holds the decision about where he will play next, acknowledging the excitement Quebec fans would feel to see him on the ice every night.
“It could be, you never know. In my opinion, he’s the one who’ll decide where he wants to go. It would be fun for Quebecers to see him play every night. He’s such a good player, a good leader,” Fleury told La Presse.
Fleury also reflected on Crosby’s strong sense of loyalty, which might make a departure from Pittsburgh challenging, pointing out how Crosby’s close friendships stretch back to his early hockey days in Rimouski.
“Sid is such a loyal person…I don’t know, it seems like he’s always been like that. Towards the team, his teammates, his linemates. Even his teammates from Rimouski are still his good friends. He’s really a great guy,” Fleury remarked.
Meanwhile, the Penguins’ general manager, Kyle Dubas, has reportedly been open to offers on nearly every player as the team considers its future strategy.
This past season, Crosby delivered an impressive performance, scoring 33 goals and totaling 91 points over 80 games.
