Veteran running back Nick Chubb is preparing for a strong return with the Houston Texans after recovering from injuries that affected the last two seasons. Following seven years with the Cleveland Browns, Chubb highlighted his offseason training and expressed optimism about being fully back to form as he aims to make a significant impact in Houston.
Nick Chubb Reflects on Recovery and Offseason Conditioning
Chubb acknowledged the challenges he faced due to injuries over the past two years but emphasized that he has passed the most difficult part of his recovery. He explained that coming back from his previous injuries typically takes around two years, and feels confident about his progress after training extensively during the offseason in his hometown.
“I would say that’s all behind me and, you know, injuries happen,”
Chubb said, via Aaron Wilson.
“And with what I did, it takes about two years to really get back. And, so, I’m over the hump. I’m back home. I was back home all offseason training where I trained every year since I was in high school. I was able to get a full year in of doing the things that I do best. And so now I’m feeling good as I have been in a long time.”
Texans Head Coach Praises Chubb’s Work Ethic and Resilience
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans shared his admiration for Chubb’s determination and professionalism during their offseason program. Ryans highlighted the running back’s quiet but relentless work ethic and noted how his comeback journey demonstrates his resilience in the face of adversity.
“We’re excited to add Nick Chubb to our team,”
Ryans said.
“He’s just a tremendous worker. Humble kid, doesn’t say much, but he’s a grinder, a worker. The one thing that sticks out about him, he’s been through a lot with the injuries and things that’s happened to him. So, just to see the resilience, to see him battle back, work in the right way to put himself in position to have another opportunity here in Houston, I couldn’t be more excited to add him to our team and see what value he can provide to us.”
Ryans also expressed confidence in the impact Chubb can have when fully healthy, describing the running back as a game-changing talent. The coach indicated that the team is integrating Chubb carefully, with an eye on his readiness as training camp approaches.

“We all know the caliber of player that Nick can be when he’s healthy and when he’s at the top of his game. He’s a dynamic player. He’s a game-changer. So, we’re just easing him in. We’ll see how far he gets. We’ll come back for training camp ready to go.”
Context Within the NFL and Offseason Developments
Chubb’s return to full strength comes amid an active NFL offseason, with various teams shaping their rosters and preparing for the 2024 campaign. This period has seen new coaching influences and key players committed to offseason programs. For instance, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen commended quarterback Daniel Jones for quickly adapting to the offense and demonstrating strong leadership skills during off-season workouts.
“Very pleased with what we got right now. He’s been doing a hell of a job,”
Steichen said, via Pro Football Talk.
“Really smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, want to carry that over to training camp, but he’s done a really good job. Great command in the huddle. Ultimate pro. A veteran player. Obviously, like I said, very intelligent. He works at it, grinds at it. So not surprised on how he’s picked up the offense. Obviously, those meetings we have in the quarterback room with those guys — the conversations that we have, they’ve been really good. So been very pleased with him.”
Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen emphasized the importance of defensive end Josh Hines-Allen’s presence in voluntary workouts to strengthen their defense.
“For him to be here as much as he has been is really, really instrumental for our defense and for our entire team,”
Coen said, via John Oehser.
Hines-Allen also shared his thoughts on the new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, praising his passion and approach to coaching.
“Everybody says the mentality, the personality, the person that he is, he’s a lot,”
Hines-Allen said.
“But it’s nice because you step into that meeting room, you’re going to expect one thing. It’s not just screaming. It’s the passion. It’s the love of the game.”
Implications of Chubb’s Return for the Texans’ Future
Nick Chubb’s progress and integration into the Texans lineup offers renewed hope for the team’s offense as they prepare for the upcoming season. His ability to perform at a high level, especially given his history as a powerful and dynamic runner, could be a critical factor in Houston’s competitive prospects in a challenging AFC South division.
As the Texans continue easing Chubb back into action, the coming weeks leading to training camp will reveal how he fits within their offensive schemes and how effectively he can sustain his health. Chubb’s successful comeback would not only boost the Texans’ ground game but also provide a dependable offensive weapon for quarterback C.J. Stroud and the coaching staff to build around.
