Gwendolyn Davis Loyd, mother of Las Vegas Aces star Jewell Loyd, addressed the backlash she encountered after sharing a photo with Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. The incident occurred following the Las Vegas Aces’ game against the Fever on Sunday in Las Vegas, where the Aces secured an 89-81 victory.
After the match, Gwendolyn posted pictures with Cunningham on social media, prompting a wave of negative reactions from fans. Some critics mocked her appearance, while others accused her of trying to use Fever supporters to boost Jewell Loyd’s All-Star votes.
“When you run into the Ms. Sophie Cunningham! Yes suh,” Loyd wrote.
In response to the growing negativity, Gwendolyn declared she would no longer engage with those attacking her for the photo.
“Urgent! Let me go there! I’m not going to entertain anyone who continues to blast and slam me for taking a picture with Sophia Cunningham- I have always been a supporter of Women Basketball and I will continue! I take optics with any player I want! Move on,” Loyd tweeted.
Jewell Loyd’s Performance Highlights from Sunday’s Game
In Sunday’s game, Jewell Loyd contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists on 5-for-11 shooting as part of a strong showing for the Las Vegas Aces. Meanwhile, Sophie Cunningham, coming off the bench, was scoreless during her 17 minutes on the floor.
Challenges Faced by Jewell Loyd in Her Rookie Season with the Aces
Jewell Loyd has experienced some difficulties in her first season with the Las Vegas Aces. Over 13 games, she is averaging 11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest. Although her three-point shooting has improved to a career-high 41.3%, her overall output has declined compared to previous seasons.
Following a recent home loss to the LA Sparks on June 11, Aces head coach Becky Hammon discussed Loyd’s on-court struggles and the possibility of a bench role prompted by the player herself.
“I think she’s getting good looks, she has just missed them,” Hammon said about Loyd and a possible bench role. “Yes, it has been talked about, brought up by her.”
The 31-year-old Loyd is entering the final season of her two-year contract worth $491,016. She was expected to take over the role left by three-time All-Star Kelsey Plum, who was traded to the Sparks during the offseason.
Upcoming Goals for the Las Vegas Aces
Currently holding a 6-7 record, the Aces are aiming for their second consecutive win when they host the Connecticut Sun, who stand at 2-12, in their next game on Wednesday. The team continues to seek cohesion and consistency as they push toward a strong finish this season.
