Savannah James shares valuable coaching advice, teaching her sons Bronny and Bryce resilience in the competitive sports world.
Every athlete, regardless of experience or skill level, encounters the dynamics of working with coaches. Savannah James, wife of NBA legend LeBron James, has firsthand insight into these challenges, given the sports journeys of her sons Bronny and Bryce in addition to her husband’s storied career. She shared key guidance on her approach to helping her sons manage conflicts that often arise between players and coaches, highlighting the importance of perseverance and adapting in competitive environments.
Understanding the Complexities of Coaching Relationships
Ideally, the relationship between athletes and coaches is collaborative: coaches guide and develop players, while athletes contribute to the team‘s success. However, conflicts can surface over decisions about playing time and roles, creating tension. Savannah pointed out that these issues are not uncommon, especially in private sports institutions where parents may have strong opinions about their children’s involvement. She explained that entitlement from some parents can complicate interactions with coaches, sometimes affecting how both coaches and players respond.
Savannah’s Guidance to Bronny and Bryce on Navigating Team Politics
On her podcast, Savannah opened up about the pressures her sons face, especially with the added spotlight of the James family name. She emphasized resilience and the value of focusing on one’s own effort rather than trying to change others’ perceptions. Savannah said,

“When we’re talking about private institutions, I feel like there’s a lot of entitlement that comes along with that, too. You think that your child is the best thing since pants with pockets, and they should be getting a certain amount of playing time, or should be playing a certain position or whatever that is.”
“That can cause rifts with how coaches react to the parents or maybe even potentially react to the kids,”
she continued.
“I’ve always told my kids, ‘Listen, you just gotta play your part. There’s nothing you can do to change somebody else’s mind if that’s what they think. So you just gotta roll with it and do your job to the best of your ability and try to prove people wrong.’”
How This Advice Is Shaping the James Boys’ Athletic Futures
Savannah’s counsel has helped Bronny and Bryce develop their own paths despite external pressures. Bronny was selected in the second round of last year’s NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, the same team where his father has been a star. Though his time in the NBA was limited, Bronny showed promise through his performances in the G League. Meanwhile, Bryce recently committed to the University of Arizona, preparing to join one of the nation’s leading college basketball programs.
The Role of Family Support Within the James Household
LeBron James has often praised Savannah’s leadership in guiding their family and acting as a role model for their three children. Despite his demanding career, LeBron remains a devoted father who balances his professional commitments with family life. The coaching wisdom Savannah imparts to Bronny and Bryce reinforces the importance of resilience and focus in the competitive world of sports. As the James family continues to navigate these challenges, their unity and shared values are vital to their ongoing success.
