Aaron Judge All-Star Starter Again as Shohei Ohtani Secures Top NL Spot; Voting Phase 2 Underway
Aaron Judge named All-Star starter for the second consecutive year, leading AL votes with over 4 million.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge topped all players with 4,012,983 votes in Phase 1 of Major League Baseball’s fan voting for the All-Star Game starting position, announced Thursday. Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers led the National League vote totals. As the highest vote-getters for their leagues, Judge and Ohtani bypass Phase 2 of voting and automatically secure starting roles for the All-Star Game, with Judge slated as one of the American League’s three outfielders and Ohtani as the National League designated hitter.

Background on Judge and Ohtani’s All-Star Careers

This year marks Judge’s seventh All-Star selection and his sixth time chosen as a starter. Although he was voted a starter in 2023, he missed that game due to a toe injury. Ohtani is heading into his fifth consecutive All-Star Game and has been voted in as a starter each time, famously starting as both pitcher and designated hitter in the 2021 All-Star Game.

Phase 2 Voting Advances with Top Candidates at Each Position

Beyond Judge and Ohtani, the top two vote-earners at each position (and the top six outfielders) in Phase 1 advance to Phase 2, where the final All-Star starters will be selected. In Phase 2, votes reset and fans choose from the finalists.

The second phase of fan voting will open on June 30 and conclude July 2, narrowing finalists into the final All-Star Game starting lineup. Remaining roster spots will be filled through a mix of player votes and selections made by the commissioner’s office. The full All-Star rosters are set for public announcement on July 6. Managers Dave Roberts of the Dodgers and Aaron Boone of the Yankees, both from the teams that met in last fall’s World Series, will manage the National League and American League teams, respectively.
