Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin appears on the July cover of Washingtonian magazine, holding a live goat to celebrate his status as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. The photo, captured by Dean Alexander, shows Ovechkin smiling while cradling a brown and white kid, highlighting the theme of the Greatest of All Time, or G.O.A.T.
Marking a Historic NHL Record with a Symbolic Image
The magazine’s tribute follows Ovechkin’s record-breaking 895th goal, scored on April 6 against the New York Islanders, which made him the NHL’s top goal scorer. Washingtonian emphasized Ovechkin’s new historic milestone with a bright yellow banner near his shoulder declaring, “We got the GOAT.”
Editor Sherri Dalphonse shared insight into the cover shoot, explaining the decision behind the goat imagery:
“Our July issue lays out 100 reasons to love D.C. right now, and the number-one reason is that we are home to the NHL’s greatest player of all time,”
she said.
“Once we confirmed that Ovi could pose for the cover, well, we knew we wanted him shot with a four-legged goat. And as readers might be able to tell when they see the photo, the minute we put Nimbus the goat in Ovechkin’s arms, the goat nestled right in.”

A Closer Look at the Photoshoot and Ovechkin’s Recent Goat Encounters
In addition to the cover, Washingtonian shared a behind-the-scenes video showing the interaction between Ovechkin and Nimbus, the goat, who wore a Capitals jersey during filming. This playful moment added warmth and personality to the magazine tribute.
Ovechkin’s connection with goats extends beyond the cover shoot. On the first day of his summer vacation, he had an encounter with goats in Turkey. Shortly after breaking the NHL scoring record, the Washington Capitals honored Ovechkin at Capital One Arena with a unique celebration featuring “Gr8ness goats.” Fans witnessed the star player holding and petting these symbolic animals during the event on April 12.
