Kristian Campbell struggles to find his rhythm with the WooSox, going 0-4 and striking out four times in tough loss.

On June 19, the Boston Red Sox sent rookie infielder Kristian Campbell to their Triple-A affiliate, the Worcester WooSox, with the goal of improving his performance at first base and regaining his offensive form in a less demanding setting. The 22-year-old had started the major league season strongly but saw his batting average drop to .223 by the time of his demotion.

With Abraham Toro and Romy González sharing first base duties for Boston, the organization believed that returning Campbell to Worcester would provide valuable playing time and help sharpen his skills.

Mixed Performance at First Base and Struggles at the Plate for WooSox

Campbell earned the starting first baseman role for Worcester and was placed in the leadoff spot, yet his night on the field revealed inconsistent results. Although adapting to first base was part of his development, his offensive struggles became more apparent. After missing some time practicing first base in a training setting in Scranton, Pennsylvania earlier in the week, he rejoined the team on June 22.

His last game before this article’s publication resulted in a 4-0 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, during which Campbell went hitless in four at-bats and was struck out each time. The WooSox offense as a whole faced challenges, managing only three singles and striking out thirteen times against the RailRiders’ pitching staff.

Outlook for Campbell’s Return to the Red Sox

Despite a difficult game that reflects a current slump, Campbell’s time at Triple-A is intended to be a chance for him to regain confidence and improve his swing. With the season ongoing, he is expected to have multiple opportunities to work on his hitting before making a return to the Boston Red Sox lineup later in the summer, which could help resolve questions surrounding his form after a rocky stretch.
