Former NFL scout John Middlekauff has expressed doubt about Kyler Murray’s long-term future with the Arizona Cardinals, citing inconsistent performances. On a recent episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Middlekauff highlighted both Murray’s talent and struggles with maintaining high-level play throughout games and over extended periods.
Murray, known for his combination of speed and a strong throwing arm, can produce highlight-worthy plays, but Middlekauff is skeptical about his ability to perform reliably, especially against stronger opponents and in critical moments.
“You could put a highlight tape together, just 10-20 plays of Kyler Murray, he’s as good as anyone in the league,” Middlekauff said (Timestamp: 05:50).
“Can he slice and dice the good teams when it matters most? I don’t see it happening,” Middlekauff said.
Despite signing a substantial contract extension in 2022—a deal considered a standard for future quarterbacks—Arizona structured the agreement to avoid full guarantees, indicating some uncertainty about his role. As the Cardinals enter another rebuilding phase, speculation grows that Murray’s tenure may end sooner rather than later.
“I would expect Kyler Murray in 2026 to be in a new home,” Middlekauff added.
Potential move to Pittsburgh as Aaron Rodgers’ eventual replacement
Speculation regarding Murray’s next destination often points to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he could succeed veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor recently suggested that Pittsburgh might view Murray as the future leader once Rodgers retires.
Rodgers, currently on a one-year deal through 2025, has hinted at retirement, making the quarterback position a high priority for the Steelers soon. Murray still has two years on his contract with a team option after 2025, but his large cap hits—$53.2 million and $43.5 million—are challenges that may require financial restructuring to facilitate any trade.
The Steelers face a choice between finding a permanent franchise quarterback or using Murray as a transition player while scouting talent for the future.
What lies ahead for Kyler Murray and the NFL landscape
Kyler Murray’s future with the Cardinals appears uncertain, as inconsistencies on the field and Arizona’s shifting strategy raise questions about his fit. The possibility of a trade by 2026 suggests the Cardinals are preparing for a fresh start at quarterback, while teams like Pittsburgh are evaluating their options for when their longtime starter retires.
This situation highlights the challenges facing NFL teams managing high-profile contracts amid performance concerns, and how player movement might reshape the league in the coming years.
