How Jacob Wilson Credits Video Games for His Stunning MLB Rookie Success
Jacob Wilson attributes his rookie success in baseball to video games, enhancing his decision-making skills on the field.

Jacob Wilson, the impressive young shortstop for the Oakland Athletics, has attributed part of his impressive rookie season success to playing video games. The 23-year-old standout, who is hitting .347 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 76 games, shared this insight during an interview with ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Wilson believes that the quick decision-making skills sharpened by video games carry over to his performance at the plate.

How Video Games Enhance Wilson’s On-Field Decision-Making

Wilson explained that playing video games, especially fast-paced strategy titles, helps him prepare mentally for the split-second decisions required in baseball.

“Kids are going to love this one. Parents are going to hate me,”

Wilson told Passan.

“I am a big believer in video games. It’s fast decision-making strategy. I think that gets me ready for the game, because when you’re in the box, you have to process a lot. So there’s some days where I’ll wake up and I’ll play video games and then I’ll go to the field, and I’ll have a good day. Some days I won’t play and don’t see the ball well. I think it really helps me train kind of the decision-making that I have to make six, seven hours later at the baseball field.”

Wilson frequently plays Fortnite, a popular third-person battle royale game, which sharpens his reflexes and mental processing. His teammate, fellow Athletics rookie Max Muncy, who often joins Wilson in gaming sessions, attests to Wilson’s skill in the virtual arena.

If we play a game with me and him and guys we know and you kill him once, you’re like, ‘That’s a good day,’

Muncy told Passan.

You could play 50 rounds. Just once is good.

Support from Family and Looking Ahead to Future Milestones

Wilson’s father, Jack Wilson, a former MLB shortstop, also acknowledges the connection between video game play and improved hand-eye coordination, provided it does not interfere with responsibilities.

I do believe in the hand-eye coordination that video games give — as long as you do your homework,

Jack Wilson said to Passan.

Kids, if you’re reading, do your homework.

After taking care of his daily commitments, Jacob Wilson finds balance by engaging in gaming before heading to the field. His efforts have not only contributed to a breakout rookie season but have also helped him secure a spot in the upcoming 2025 MLB All-Star Game scheduled for July 15 in Atlanta.
