Dallas Stars re-sign Jamie Benn to a one-year contract worth up to $4 million, reaffirming his leadership role.

The Dallas Stars have finalized a one-year contract extension with their longtime captain Jamie Benn, worth up to $4 million with added bonuses, as reported by Mark Lazerus of The Athletic. Benn, who has been the team’s captain since the 2013-14 season, will continue his tenure into the 2025-26 season at age 36, maintaining his status as a core figure in the Stars organization.

Reviewing Benn’s Performance in the 2024-25 Season

Jamie Benn’s 2024-25 season saw him tally 16 goals and a total of 49 points, figures that align closely with his usual production over recent years. Although his 2022-23 season featured a standout 33-goal, 78-point campaign, Benn’s outputs in other years have generally been more moderate. In 18 playoff games this season, however, his offensive impact lessened, recording only one goal and two assists while averaging 13 minutes and 6 seconds of ice time per game, a noticeable reduction from the previous season’s 17 minutes and 8 seconds.

The Contributions Benn Continues to Make

Though past his peak as a power forward, Jamie Benn remains a rugged winger capable of contributing physicality, scoring 15 to 20 goals, and producing around 40 to 45 points in good seasons. Apart from his remarkable Art Ross Trophy-winning season with 89 points, his performance has been steadier but less explosive. He has overcome health challenges and has maintained a strong presence on the ice, playing 80 or more games in each of the last four seasons. Beyond statistics, Benn’s leadership and experience provide crucial stability, particularly as the team heads into playoff contention.

Benn’s Evolving Role within the Stars Lineup

At this stage in his career, Jamie Benn’s function has shifted from primary offensive driver to a valuable role player. Known for his physical play, evidenced by 114 hits last season, Benn is expected to fill a dependable third-line position with occasional shifts on the second line, contributing secondary scoring rather than leading roles. Given the depth of offensive talent on the roster, he is unlikely to see power-play time. Realistically, his goal production is projected closer to 15 for the season, with point totals in the 35-40 range. The team’s management views Benn as a franchise cornerstone, nearly certain to remain a Dallas icon for life after his lengthy service.
