Dylan Harper, the 2025 second overall pick, will wear the No. 2 jersey for the San Antonio Spurs, a number previously worn by Kawhi Leonard, the 2014 NBA Finals MVP. This choice has sparked debate among fans, with Ron Harper, Dylan’s father and a five-time NBA champion, stepping in to respond to criticism.
Legion Hoops, citing NBA jersey insider Etienne Catalan, confirmed Harper’s new jersey number on Friday. The decision drew reactions on social media, including one fan who strongly objected to Dylan wearing Leonard’s former number.
“Kawhi’s number deserves to be retired. Disgusting.”
Ron Harper replied directly to this criticism, pointing out that Kawhi Leonard is still an active player.
“He’s still playing I think.
The fan responded by asking if Dylan would relinquish the number once Leonard retires, but Harper did not engage further.
“So Dylan will give it up when Kawhi retires?”
Ron Harper has a storied NBA career spanning 15 years with five championships. He was a vital part of the Chicago Bulls’ second three-peat from 1996 to 1998 and contributed to the Los Angeles Lakers’ titles in 2000 and 2001. Harper’s experience includes playing alongside legends such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. His other son, Ron Harper Jr., currently holds a two-way contract with the Detroit Pistons after going undrafted in 2022 and spending time in the G League.
Kawhi Leonard was a foundational figure for the Spurs during his seven seasons with the team, earning accolades such as two All-Star selections, two Defensive Player of the Year awards, two All-NBA first-team honors, and four All-Defensive Team nods. His departure in 2018, amid well-publicized reasons, marked the end of an era for the franchise.
Dylan Harper Embraces Spurs Fans After Draft Selection
Following his selection by the Spurs, Dylan Harper shared a message to the team’s supporters, showcasing his enthusiasm for joining the franchise. Harper posted a photo wearing a Spurs cap along with an encouraging note.
“Spurs nation let’s do it mannnnnn,” Harper wrote.
Although Cooper Flagg was widely regarded as the likely first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, analysts view Dylan Harper as the top prospect after him. The 6-foot-6 guard impressed during his single season at Rutgers, averaging 19.4 points per game on 48.4 percent shooting.
Harper’s addition strengthens an already promising young core for San Antonio next season, led by 2023 top pick Victor Wembanyama. The team also features one-time All-Star De’Aaron Fox and emerging talents like Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson, positioning the Spurs to be competitive in the coming years.
