Nathan MacKinnon Denies Sidney Crosby Trade Rumors: Calls Reports ‘Fake News’ Ahead of NHL Draft
Nathan MacKinnon dismisses trade rumors linking Sidney Crosby to the Avalanche as 'fake news' during 2025 NHL draft.

Nathan MacKinnon, star forward for the Colorado Avalanche, dismissed recent rumors suggesting that Sidney Crosby could be traded by the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason. The rumors surfaced during the first round of the 2025 NHL draft, but MacKinnon labeled the reports as “fake news” when responding to a screenshot shared online.

Close Ties Between MacKinnon and Crosby Highlighted

Both MacKinnon and Crosby come from the same region, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and share a longstanding friendship. Their connection has been strengthened by competing together on multiple occasions representing Team Canada, including events such as the 2015 World Championship, the 4 Nations Face-Off, and the IIHF World Championship.

They have also both been selected for Team Canada’s roster in preparation for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy, underscoring their continued prominence at the international level.

Crosby’s Commitment to Pittsburgh and Penguins’ Rebuild Effort

Sidney Crosby recently signed a two-year contract extension worth $17.4 million, which will keep him with the Penguins through the 2026-27 season. At 37 years old, Crosby has maintained a point-per-game production rate over two decades with Pittsburgh and has captained the team since 2007. His leadership helped secure Stanley Cup victories in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

Despite Crosby’s individual success, the Penguins have failed to reach the playoffs in the past three seasons and are currently in a rebuilding phase. General manager Kyle Dubas has been active in the 2025 NHL draft, acquiring picks to support the team’s future strategy.

Contrast in Team Timelines: Avalanche vs. Penguins

MacKinnon, 29, is under contract with Colorado for another six years, positioning the Avalanche for continued contention in the near term. Although the Penguins are restructuring, MacKinnon’s response indicates he does not foresee Crosby joining Colorado to chase another Stanley Cup anytime soon.
