Tom Wilson celebrates his friendship with Zdeno Chara, praising their journey from rivals to teammates in heartfelt tribute.

During the Washington Capitals’ COVID-19-shortened 2020-21 NHL season, a surprising friendship blossomed as veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara joined the team. Known as one of the greatest rearguards in NHL history, Chara signed a one-year contract worth $795,000, turning a former rival of the Capitals, from his days with the Boston Bruins, into a respected teammate. Central to this change was the growing connection between Chara and Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson.

A Fierce Fight that Sparked Mutual Respect

Before becoming teammates, Wilson and Chara faced off fiercely on December 11, 2019, when Wilson fought the towering Chara, who holds the record as the tallest player in NHL history. This intense confrontation was an early chapter in their evolving relationship. Nearly five years after that showdown, Wilson was among the most vocal in celebrating Chara’s induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, which was announced on Tuesday.

Wilson shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating,

“Huge congrats to big Zee on being a 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee,”

followed by,

“It was a true privilege to be able to compete both against you and by your side. Well deserved my friend!”

He also posted a photo capturing the moment of their fight along with another image showing their camaraderie as Capitals teammates.

Memorable Moments and Teamwork on Display

Alongside these images, Wilson included a humorous video highlighting the duo’s chemistry on the ice. The clip showed Wilson and Chara teaming up against New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau shortly after a whistle. The pair overwhelmed the smaller player with shoves and punches, causing Pageau to lose his helmet and hockey stick amid their on-ice dominance. This display epitomized the tough, united front Wilson and Chara formed as teammates.

Wilson’s Admiration for Chara’s Leadership and Work Ethic

Wilson developed immense respect for Chara, especially after observing the defender’s relentless work ethic off the ice. Reflecting on Chara’s influence, Wilson explained in 2021,

“When you see him walk around, you see him in the gym, there’s just this feeling he puts off.”

He continued,

“This vibe he puts off that just makes everyone around him better. He’s an amazing leader. Watching him in there putting in work is surreal sometimes, how strong he is.”

Wilson praised how Chara handled weight training with apparent ease, saying,

“Just honestly, when he’s picking up weights, that should be heavy, they don’t look heavy.”

He added,

“It’s a lot of fun to be around. I’ve found myself getting better just being around him, working out with him, preparing with him. He demands that from his teammates.”

The Lasting Impact of Their Friendship and What Lies Ahead

The relationship between Tom Wilson and Zdeno Chara highlights how on-ice rivalry can evolve into deep respect and friendship, enriching team dynamics and individual growth. As Chara enters the Hockey Hall of Fame, his legacy is celebrated not only for his defensive prowess but also for the leadership that inspired teammates like Wilson. This bond underscores the importance of perseverance and camaraderie in professional sports, setting a positive example for current and future players in the NHL.
