Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Late Addition to Blue Jays Lineup Sparks Excitement Ahead of Red Sox Clash
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rejoins the Blue Jays lineup against the Red Sox after earlier concerns about his injury.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was initially absent from the Toronto Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Friday’s opening game against the Boston Red Sox, but a late update confirmed his inclusion in the batting order. The decision to reinstate Guerrero in his customary third spot and at first base was announced shortly before the game began.

Guerrero had exited Thursday’s contest early after being hit on the forearm by a 95 m.p.h. sinker thrown by Tanner Bibee. The Blue Jays conducted X-rays following the incident, which fortunately showed no fractures. Manager John Schneider offered reassurance on Guerrero’s status, saying,

“Vladdy’s sore, but he’s all right.”

Lineup Adjustments to Accommodate Guerrero’s Return

The return of Guerrero prompted several positional changes within the lineup. Ernie Clement, who was originally slated to start at first base, shifted over to third base to make space for Guerrero. Addison Barger moved to right field, while Alan Roden was removed from the lineup to accommodate these adjustments.

Current Performance and Season Stats of Guerrero Jr.

At 26 years old, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been a key offensive contributor for Toronto this season. He has amassed 11 home runs and 40 RBIs, while maintaining a batting slash line of .281/.387/.449. Guerrero’s presence in the lineup is critical for the Blue Jays as they face tough competition in the American League East.

Additional Updates on Key Blue Jays Players

Manager Schneider also shared updates on other important players. Outfielder Daulton Varsho, sidelined since early June with a hamstring injury, has recently increased his running activity and is expected to soon begin base running. Varsho has appeared in 24 games this year, hitting .207/.240/.543 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. His last appearance was on May 31 against the Athletics, where he recorded a double, a walk, and scored a run over two plate appearances.

Conversely, Anthony Santander’s progress has been less encouraging. Despite being one of Toronto’s major off-season signings and placed on the injured list due to left shoulder inflammation, Santander has not resumed swinging or hitting yet. He sustained the shoulder injury in early May after colliding with the stands while chasing a fly ball during a series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Santander’s Struggles Since Joining the Blue Jays

Since signing a five-year, $92.5 million contract in free agency, Santander has faced difficulties establishing consistent form with the Blue Jays. Over 50 games, he has posted a .179 batting average with a .577 OPS and six home runs. His 55 strikeouts were the highest on the team before his injury and remain among the top three now. His most recent game was on May 29 against the Athletics, where he struck out twice and walked twice in four plate appearances.

Blue Jays Prepare for the Red Sox Series on Sportsnet

The Blue Jays’ matchup against their AL East rivals, the Boston Red Sox, will be broadcast on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ starting at 7 p.m. ET. Guerrero’s late addition to the lineup brings renewed energy to the team as they look to maintain momentum while managing injuries to key contributors like Varsho and Santander.
