Dodgers Build Strong Foundation as Shohei Ohtani Gradually Returns to Pitching Role
Shohei Ohtani's pitching foundation builds slowly as the Dodgers prioritize his long-term performance over immediate results.

Shohei Ohtani made his second pitching start of the season earlier this week, though he once again pitched just one inning. Despite completing only a single frame, Ohtani demonstrated greater sharpness than in his Dodgers pitching debut, efficiently throwing 18 pitches. The Dodgers’ cautious approach aligns with their plan to slowly rebuild Ohtani’s pitching foundation while balancing his demanding two-way role.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that the one-inning limit was deliberate, emphasizing the team’s focus on gradual progress rather than pushing for extended innings immediately. With this methodical approach, the Dodgers aim to lay a strong groundwork that will allow Ohtani to extend his pitch count safely as the season continues.

Building Blocks and Communication Between Player and Team

Roberts highlighted how the team’s priority is to establish “the foundation and building blocks,” allowing Ohtani to warm up to pitching again by taking an inning here and there. This gradual development reflects an intent to prioritize Ohtani’s long-term health over rushing his comeback.

I think it’s just more of trying to get the foundation and building blocks as he’s taking at-bats, getting an inning here, an inning there,

Roberts explained.

Just gradually progress. Erring on the side of caution.

Ohtani remains actively involved in deciding how his recovery and pitching workload progress. This collaboration was central ahead of his first start, and it remains vital as he increases his innings.

I don’t know if in his next one we’re going to go an up-down potentially, or just one inning. I’m not sure. I think going into today’s game, we felt really comfortable with the one inning.

Roberts acknowledged the ongoing uncertainty about Ohtani’s next pitching appearance.

I think right now he’s good with one inning. All of this is conversations we have with him obviously, so he’s understanding where he’s at, where we’re at, and appreciating the fact that as time goes on we’ll get to a certain point,

Roberts said.

But there’s no sense in rushing him right now.

Ohtani’s Ambitious Aims for Two-Way Play

As Ohtani resumes pitching, his time for hitting practice is limited compared to last year; nevertheless, he has voiced optimism about improving as a two-way player this season. With the Dodgers’ support, Ohtani is focused on balancing his pitching and hitting responsibilities as he rebuilds stamina on the mound.

The Dodgers’ cautious but hopeful strategy signals their confidence in Ohtani’s ability to regain form piece by piece, building a durable foundation that could benefit both him and the team as the season advances.
