Al Horford Likely to Leave Celtics Amid Free Agency Frenzy with Top Teams Eyeing Veteran Star
Al Horford's future with the Celtics is uncertain as free agency looms, with potential contenders eyeing the veteran big man.

The Boston Celtics appear set to part ways with veteran big man Al Horford in the upcoming free agency period, continuing a roster overhaul that has already seen Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis exit this offseason. Reports on June 29 suggest that despite Horford’s valuable contributions, salary cap constraints and team strategy make a return to Boston unlikely for the 39-year-old forward.

Al Horford’s departure from the Celtics is driven largely by the team’s financial limitations amid a looming $500 million combined salary and luxury tax bill. Sources indicate that Boston is hesitant to allocate additional funds toward a veteran reserve, even one as versatile and experienced as Horford. However, his ability to provide solid defense, reliable three-point shooting, and courtroom leadership has kept him in demand across the league.

Potential Teams Ready to Offer Horford a Notable Increase

Several franchises are positioned to offer Al Horford a significant pay raise, likely centered around the NBA’s full mid-level exception, which could exceed $14 million for next season. This financial incentive is expected to attract Horford to teams with cap space and needs for his skill set.

A number of teams hold this mid-level exception, including the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards. Of these, the Spurs stand out as a promising fit. San Antonio requires a reliable big man off the bench and is projected to make a significant leap next season, led by young star Victor Wembanyama.

The Oklahoma City Thunder also show interest in adding frontcourt depth. Yet, with their recent three-year contract extension of Jaylin Williams and return of Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, opportunities for Horford’s minutes may be limited. Meanwhile, the Bulls need added big man support but remain a mid-tier playoff contender. Utah might seek frontcourt reinforcements if they trade young center Walker Kessler, though the team‘s preference appears to be signing Kessler to a lucrative, long-term deal.

Lakers and Warriors Could Pursue Horford as Strategic Addition

The Los Angeles Lakers, struggling with rim protection, represent a strong potential destination for Horford. His defensive versatility, ability to guard on the perimeter, and consistent three-point shooting align well with the Lakers’ immediate needs. However, Los Angeles may only be able to offer the taxpayer mid-level exception, approximately $5.7 million, which is below Horford’s expected market value.

Similarly, the Golden State Warriors could find Horford’s skill set attractive to complement their roster. The Warriors have roughly $17 million below the luxury tax threshold, offering some financial flexibility. However, their ability to add new players this offseason depends on the restricted free agency situation surrounding Jonathan Kuminga, which will heavily influence roster decisions.

Another option for Horford is a return to the Atlanta Hawks, where he spent the first nine seasons of his NBA career. The Hawks have frontcourt openings and could offer Horford the full mid-level exception. Atlanta remains a popular destination among players, and Horford’s familiarity with the team and city might appeal if he accepts a more limited role.

Veteran Experience Meets Roster Challenges Amid Free Agency

Throughout his career, Al Horford has demonstrated an ability to adapt and contribute significantly even in his late 30s. Over the last two seasons, he earned around $19.5 million combined and has amassed more than $285 million in lifetime earnings. With a new NBA championship ring added to his résumé, Horford’s motivations this offseason could extend beyond salary to factors such as title contention, fit, and location.

Despite his age, Horford’s consistent level of performance makes him a valuable commodity among contenders and playoff hopefuls alike. Teams balancing cap space and needs face challenging decisions, but Horford’s blend of defensive prowess, shooting range, and veteran leadership ensures he remains highly sought after in a busy free agent market.
