Bryce Harper Phillies Return Update: Star First Baseman Eyes Comeback as Soon as Next Week
Bryce Harper could return to the Phillies lineup next week after recovering from wrist inflammation, boosting the team's chances.

Philadelphia Phillies’ star first baseman Bryce Harper is aiming to rejoin the team’s lineup as soon as next week following a stretch on the injured list due to inflammation in his right wrist. Harper, who has recently resumed facing live pitching, has not played in a game since June 5 but expressed optimism about his recovery progress during a Friday press update.

Harper Expresses Satisfaction with His Rehabilitation Progress

Reflecting on his current condition, Harper shared,

If you had told me three weeks ago [I’d be] where I am now, I would have said you’re kind of crazy,

and added,

So I’m very happy with where I am. I’m way farther ahead than I felt like I would be. Definitely way healthier than I was a couple weeks ago.

He also commented on the timing of his return, saying,

I think next week is definitely in play,

and clarified,

But I don’t want to solidify which day or anything like that. But I’m happy with where I’m at.

Phillies’ Upcoming Schedule and Harper’s Potential Availability

The Phillies will finish their current weekend series against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday before starting a week-long homestand. This stretch includes three-game series against the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds, with a day off scheduled on Thursday between those matchups. Harper’s readiness aligns with this important period in the team’s season, increasing the chances that he will contribute during this homestand.

Impact of Harper’s Absence and Stand-In Performance

Before his placement on the injured list, Harper had a .258 batting average, with an on-base percentage of .368 and a slugging percentage of .446, resulting in a 123 OPS+ over 57 games this season. He had also contributed nine home runs and 34 RBIs, with an estimated 1.4 Wins Above Replacement according to Baseball Reference. In his absence, rookie Otto Kemp has taken over much of the first base duties, compiling a .246/.329/.338 slash line with a home run and a stolen base across 19 games.

Phillies’ Standings and Season Outlook Amid Harper’s Absence

As the team heads into Sunday’s game, the Phillies maintain first place in the National League East with a 48-35 record despite a challenging June that has included a 12-13 record so far. Philadelphia has managed to preserve its lead partly due to the recent struggles of rivals like the New York Mets. Harper’s return could provide a significant boost as the Phillies navigate the crucial stretch of the season ahead.
