Gary Payton II Warriors Return Looks Doubtful as Golden State Weighs Free Agency Options
Gary Payton II's return to the Warriors faces uncertainty as free agency looms, leaving fans hopeful yet anxious.

Gary Payton II’s continuation with the Golden State Warriors appears uncertain as the team evaluates its options ahead of free agency. According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, Payton’s return to the Warriors is “in serious jeopardy” with sources indicating that while the team still values him, his comeback is far from guaranteed.

One source expressed cautious optimism, saying,

“Golden State still likes him, and there’s still a chance he’s back,”

but also warned there are many variables to consider.

“But they have a lot of moving parts as they work through the Jonathan Kuminga situation, so Gary could land elsewhere next season,”

the source added.

Payton’s Impact and Career with Golden State

At 32 years old, Gary Payton II has been a key reserve during his tenure with the Warriors, which spans five of his nine NBA seasons. In the most recent campaign, he appeared in 62 games, starting 11, and contributed 6.5 points per game on an efficient 57.4 percent shooting rate, averaging 15 minutes each contest.

Payton’s journey with Golden State began when he signed a 10-day contract in April 2021. He soon secured a place on the roster and played an essential role during the Warriors’ 2021-22 championship run. That season, he appeared in 71 games, starting 16, and averaged 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in just under 18 minutes per game.

A Stint Away and Return to Golden State

After the championship season, Payton signed a three-year, $28 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. However, his time there was disrupted by core muscle surgery, which delayed his debut until January 2023. After 15 games with Portland, Payton was traded back to Golden State just one month into the season and has remained a valued member of the team since.

Potential Roster Changes Could Affect Payton’s Role

Despite his importance, the Warriors’ ongoing roster adjustments, especially concerning restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga and other team moves, leave Payton’s status unclear. This situation could open up opportunities for emerging talents like Will Richard, the ex-Florida guard and 2025 second-round draft pick, to join the rotation this season.

As Golden State navigates free agency, the fate of Payton’s Warriors tenure will be an important decision point with possible implications for the team’s depth and future lineup.
