Jabari Smith Jr. Set to Sign $122M Extension as Rockets Gear Up After Kevin Durant Trade
Kevin Durant's trade reshapes Rockets' future, paving the way for Jabari Smith Jr.'s pivotal role and long-term commitment.

Jabari Smith Jr. is set to remain with the Houston Rockets by signing a five-year, $122 million contract extension, as confirmed by ESPN’s Shams Charania. This fully guaranteed contract will keep Smith with the Rockets through the 2030-31 NBA season, reflecting the team’s commitment to him after the Kevin Durant Rockets trade impact reshaped their roster.

Smith’s Role Expected to Expand After Kevin Durant Trade

Previously, Smith was slated to play the 2025-26 season under a $12.4 million club option before becoming a restricted free agent in 2026. However, the new contract extension signals the Rockets’ plans for Smith to take on a more permanent spot in their starting lineup. According to reports from The Athletic’s Kelly Iko and Sam Amick, Smith’s role will likely increase as the Rockets build around their young core in the wake of acquiring Kevin Durant.

Player Performance and Injury Challenges in Recent Seasons

The former third overall pick showed promise last season by averaging 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds through the first 33 games as a starter. Unfortunately, Smith suffered a left-hand injury during a shootaround, sidelining him for 22 games in January and February. After returning on February 21, he alternated in and out of the starting five and finished the season with averages of 12.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists across 57 games, including 39 starts.

During Houston’s first playoff appearance in five years, Smith contributed an average of 7.4 points over seven games, though the Rockets were eliminated in the opening round by the Golden State Warriors.

Significance of the New Contract for the Rockets’ Future

The substantial extension demonstrates the Rockets’ belief that Smith is a vital part of their rebuilding process and future championship aspirations. Turning 22 this October, Smith faced some shooting struggles last season, likely influenced by his injury recovery. With this new deal, the Rockets anticipate that Smith’s efficiency and playing time will improve as he enters a healthier and more mature phase of his career in the 2025-26 season and beyond.
