Aaron Judge has consistently taken personal responsibility for his performance and the team’s shortcomings, setting high standards for himself and the New York Yankees. After the team’s recent victory over the Oakland Athletics, Judge conveyed clear expectations for the Yankees front office as the trade deadline approaches, emphasizing the need for impactful additions to strengthen the roster.
Following the win, Judge highlighted Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s contributions, praising him in a way that seemed directed at General Manager Brian Cashman.
“That’s what the Yankees do. We go out for guys that are going to make an impact and make this team better. As a guy that makes this team overall better — defensively and offensively — you stick them in the middle of the order, good things are going to happen,”
Judge told reporters.
With the trade deadline just a month away, Judge’s remarks underscored his role as team captain and his desire for the front office to pursue key reinforcements. The Yankees currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East and boast the third-best record in the AL, heading into a Monday night game in Toronto.
Despite a solid start to the season, New York’s weaknesses have become apparent. The team needs an additional right-handed power hitter, ideally an infielder capable of playing third base, along with bullpen support and possibly another starting pitcher. These needs have been acknowledged by Cashman since the season began.
Cashman has openly expressed his wish to add a right-handed bat and bolster the pitching staff, especially after Gerrit Cole’s season-ending injury and with Luis Gil expected back on the mound later next month. Judge’s message serves as a reminder to the front office of what is required to remain competitive.
Judge, now 32, is all too familiar with the frustration of falling short in the postseason. Last year, he came close to a championship before the Yankees suffered a humiliating defeat in the World Series. As the postseason approaches this year, the burden of expectation weighs heavily on him.
By speaking out, Judge is making it clear that he expects the Yankees management to act decisively at the trade deadline to improve the team and fulfill their championship ambitions.
