Bubba Wallace’s position in the NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is under significant threat with just eight races left in the regular season. Currently driving for 23XI Racing, Wallace clings to the final playoff spot by a slim margin of 23 points over challenger Ryan Preece, highlighting the precarious nature of his campaign.
After a disappointing 22nd-place finish in Atlanta, Wallace’s playoff standing is precariously balanced at the cutoff line. Without a victory this season to secure an automatic playoff berth, every upcoming race becomes vital for maintaining his playoff hopes.
Struggles with Consistency Mark Wallace’s 2025 Season
The 2025 season for Wallace has been characterized by inconsistency, with performances fluctuating between promising top-10 finishes and significant setbacks. Although he achieved six top-10 results, including strong showings in Nashville, Michigan, and Mexico City, frequent difficulties have undermined his progress.
Recent races have exposed these challenges, as Wallace encountered a brake failure at Pocono that led to a 36th-place finish and damage from an early crash at Atlanta that relegated him to 22nd. These incidents have contributed to his ongoing winless streak this year, rendering each race critical for his playoff bid.
Despite this, Wallace’s team owner and NASCAR veteran Denny Hamlin remains confident in his potential to secure a win soon.
I just know the resources that we’ve put in at 23XI, and all of our drivers should win. That is the expectation that I have of them. Obviously, it is a results-based business, and if you don’t over time, you consider your options,
Hamlin told Fox’s Bob Pockrass.

Hamlin further emphasized confidence in Wallace’s development, stating,
Overall, I’ve seen enough progression, specifically, from the [Wallace] standpoint, that I can see where this can go. Putting himself in a playoff position year after year is good, but winning makes it better.
Playoff Cutoff and Rival Pressure Tighten the Race for All Remaining Spots
Currently positioned on the edge of the playoff cutoff, Wallace holds the final playoff spot as the regular season approaches its conclusion. Only four additional spots remain available based on points, following the automatic qualifications of 12 race winners this season.
The drivers closest to Wallace on points include Tyler Reddick (+128), Chris Buescher (+52), and Alex Bowman (+39), with Ryan Preece lurking just behind. A surprise victory from a driver outside the top 16, such as Preece or Austin Cindric, could push the cutoff line higher, potentially knocking Wallace out of playoff contention.
This dynamic means Wallace must capitalize on every remaining race, either by increasing his points lead or ending his winless streak to guarantee a secure spot in the postseason.
Wallace Acknowledges Pressure and Focuses on Execution for Playoff Survival
With the playoffs within reach but far from assured, Wallace recognizes the urgency to deliver a victory.
We have expected to win at this point in the season, and we have yet to do that,
he admitted.
But it goes back to executing, and if we can just do our jobs, there’s no one behind us in the points that can beat us. So we’ll just continue to do that.
His emphasis on steady performance and flawless execution reflects a calm, focused approach despite the mounting pressure, as Wallace aims to secure his place in the postseason and turn around his challenging 2025 campaign.
