The Toronto Raptors have demonstrated their strong commitment to starting center Jakob Poeltl by securing him with a significant contract extension in 2023, which now extends his stay with the team through 2030. This move played a key role in Toronto’s decision regarding the Kevin Durant Raptors trade decision earlier this year.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Jakob Poeltl agreed to a four-year extension valued at $104 million.
“Poeltl will pick up his 2026-27 player option at $19.5M and add three additional years to his deal,”
Charania reported. The details of the contract beyond this remain undisclosed. Poeltl, who was the Raptors’ lottery pick in 2016, recently delivered career-best numbers by averaging 14.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
At 29 years old, Poeltl is entering his peak playing years. NBA insider Jake Fischer revealed that the Raptors’ determination to retain him strongly influenced their approach to assembling any potential deal involving Kevin Durant. Fischer stated,
“Toronto didn’t want to include Jakob Poeltl in any trade for Kevin Durant,”
adding,
“They wanted to give that a man a bag.”
Due to this firm stance, the Raptors ultimately passed on acquiring Durant, who was subsequently traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which was used to select Khaman Maluach. Meanwhile, Toronto has committed to several hefty contract extensions elsewhere on the roster, including deals exceeding $100 million for Immanuel Quickley and Brandon Ingram.
Community Response Following the Multi-Million Dollar Poeltl Contract
The Raptors’ decision to invest over $100 million in Jakob Poeltl came at a time of transition, notably after the departure of longtime team president Masai Ujiri. Fans and analysts have been vocal in their reactions to this decisive spending, interpreting it as a clear message about the team’s core priorities, especially as they move forward without Ujiri’s leadership.
