Former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone expressed his desire to see Max Verstappen continue with Red Bull well beyond the 2025 season, amid growing rumors linking the driver with a move to Mercedes. As discussions about Verstappen’s future intensify, especially following talks between Mercedes and Verstappen’s team before the Austrian Grand Prix, Ecclestone emphasized the importance of Verstappen being where he feels content.

Although Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, it is believed to include an exit clause that could allow an earlier departure. This possibility has stirred conversations among teams and fans alike, particularly as Red Bull has struggled to keep pace with McLaren this year, leaving Verstappen trailing in third place in the drivers’ standings.

Current championship battle highlights Verstappen’s precarious position

Leading into the British Grand Prix, Verstappen holds a narrow nine-point lead over George Russell, who has been a standout performer this season. This tight margin underscores the shifting dynamics within the championship race and adds weight to the rumors of Verstappen’s possible transfer. The recent struggles of Red Bull relative to competitors have fueled speculation about Verstappen’s motivations and team loyalty.

When speaking to Sky Sports, Ecclestone stressed that Verstappen’s decision should ultimately reflect where he finds happiness, coupled with maintaining his impressive racing form.

“I think he should be where he’s happy, wherever it’s going to be,”

Ecclestone said.

“As long as that he’s happy and still performing the way he’s performing now because he’s not a guy who messes around is he? Obviously, we will have to wait and see.”

Mercedes maintains confidence in current driver lineup amid Verstappen rumors

Despite speculation about Verstappen joining Mercedes, team principal Toto Wolff has reaffirmed his satisfaction with the current driver lineup. George Russell, in particular, has earned praise for his performances this season and is expected to receive a contract extension. Russell has consistently delivered strong results, often outperforming his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, who has encountered typical challenges associated with his inaugural season.

Antonelli, regarded as a promising young talent, has shown glimpses of speed but has yet to fully justify his reputation as a generational prospect. With 2025 regarded as a developmental year for Antonelli, the 2026 season is pivotal for his growth, especially given Wolff’s reported long-term plans that might include Verstappen in the future.
