Angel Reese earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award in late June, highlighting her recent turnaround with the Chicago Sky after a challenging start to the WNBA season. Reese secured the honor by averaging 19.7 points, 17.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game, marking a notable comeback fueled by historic rebounding performances.
The Chicago Sky forward shared her initial thoughts on receiving the accolade through a repost on X/Twitter, pairing the announcement with a quote she previously stated to express her mindset:
“God will never give me a storm I can’t handle.”
Reese first uttered this motivating phrase while reflecting on her record-setting achievement as the first player in WNBA history to collect 70 rebounds over four consecutive games. During this span, she also recorded six double-doubles in seven outings, demonstrating consistent dominance on the court.
Alongside Reese’s recognition in the Eastern Conference, the Western Conference Player of the Week honor went to Las Vegas Aces star and reigning MVP A’ja Wilson. In her most recent appearance, Reese produced 24 points and 16 rebounds, shooting an efficient 10-of-19 from the field to lead Chicago to victory against the LA Sparks.
This latest achievement strengthens Reese’s bid for an All-Star selection this season, potentially marking her second consecutive appearance after debuting as a rookie last year. Early in the season, however, she struggled with shooting efficiency, notably going 0-for-8 in a loss to the New York Liberty during the team’s second game.
Despite Reese’s individual improvement, the Sky continue to face challenges as a team, sitting at 10th place with a 5-11 record overall.
Angel Reese Reflects on Early Season Challenges
Reese encountered difficulties in the season’s opening phase, impacting both her performance and the Chicago Sky’s start. Speaking with insider Karli Bell, Reese described the emotional and mental challenges she faced during her slump.
“I went through a storm through the first eight games where I couldn’t finish and it was frustrating,”
“But I trusted my work and my teammates trusted my work in finally coming through and coming through efficiently,” she added.
The Sky’s 0-4 start aligned closely with Reese’s struggles, indicating a rocky team beginning. Although the Sky have managed to improve slightly, winning two of their last six games, their overall performance has yet to meet postseason aspirations.
Reese’s ability to overcome her early-season difficulties reflects both her resilience and the trust built among her teammates, signaling potential for continued growth as the season progresses.
