The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Justin Danforth to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $1.8 million, announced Wednesday. This agreement follows Danforth’s career-best 2024-25 season, marking a key addition for the team as they strengthen their roster.

Danforth’s Consistent Performance and Impact on the Ice

At age 32, Justin Danforth brings experience from 183 NHL games over four seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. During the 2024-25 season, he recorded 21 points, including nine goals and twelve assists, in 61 games while averaging just over 14 minutes of ice time per game. His physical style was evident in his career-high 126 hits, ranking fourth on Columbus. Advanced statistics also highlighted his impact; with Danforth on the ice in 5-on-5 play, the Blue Jackets controlled 51 percent of expected goals and 54 percent of high-danger scoring chances, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Development from Undrafted Player to NHL Contributor

Danforth’s journey to the NHL is marked by steady growth. The Oshawa, Ontario native went undrafted but built his skills during four seasons at Sacred Heart University. After college, he played 20 games with the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ AHL affiliate, between 2016-17 and 2017-18. Since entering the NHL, he has amassed 64 points over 183 games. In the previous season, 2023-24, he achieved personal bests in games played (71), assists (16), and total points (26), matching his rookie goal total from 2021-22 with 10 goals.

What This Means for the Sabres Moving Forward

By adding Danforth on a two-year contract, the Sabres gain a dependable forward known for his physicality and ability to contribute offensively. His proven performance, especially his effectiveness in even-strength scenarios, suggests he will be a valuable asset as Buffalo aims to improve its competitive standing in the NHL. The signing reflects the team’s cautious but optimistic approach toward building depth and experience in their lineup for upcoming seasons.
