The voting for Phase 2 of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game concluded on Wednesday, resulting in Los Angeles Dodgers stars Freddie Freeman and Will Smith joining Shohei Ohtani as starters for the National League. Despite advancing as finalists, Mookie Betts and several other Dodgers players fell short of securing starting positions in the lineup.
Alongside Betts, Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, Teoscar Hernández, and Andy Pages also reached Phase 2 as All-Star finalists but did not earn starting roles. Betts, a six-time All-Star starter, had been a consistent presence in previous games, including four starts for the Dodgers. Muncy, who began once as a designated hitter in the 2021 All-Star Game and appeared as a reserve earlier, was likewise unable to claim a starting spot. Both Edman and Pages were seeking their first-ever All-Star selections.
The complete roster, including reserves and pitchers for the game scheduled at Truist Park in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 15, will be announced Sunday, July 6. This leaves open the possibility that these Dodgers players could still be named to the National League squad.
Mookie Betts Faces Tough Competition in Voting
Throughout the All-Star voting process, Betts trailed New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and was unable to close the gap despite the vote totals being reset for the final phase. Betts’ batting slump this season may have impacted fan support, even as he continued to deliver strong defensive performances at shortstop.
Tommy Edman and Max Muncy’s Voting Struggles
Edman, contesting the National League second base spot, consistently remained behind the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, never taking the lead in voting. Similarly, Max Muncy held steady in second place but was surpassed by San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who led the position voting and will start the game.
Outfielders Teoscar Hernández and Andy Pages Fall Short
Teoscar Hernández was close to securing one of the three starting outfield positions for the National League until the last update showed him dropping to fourth place, preventing him from making his third All-Star appearance. Andy Pages experienced a late surge in votes that earned him finalist status, but a decline to sixth place in the final update stopped him from gaining a starting spot or higher placement.
The Dodgers’ lineup will prominently feature Freeman and Smith, with Ohtani continuing to lead the National League side. The awaiting announcement on July 6 will reveal whether Betts, Edman, Muncy, Hernández, or Pages will be named reserves or pitchers, keeping fans hopeful for their inclusion despite the starting lineup setbacks.
