Red Sox CBO: Rafael Devers Trade Frees Payroll but Doesn’t Guarantee Alex Bregman Extension
Rafael Devers' surprise trade to the San Francisco Giants shocked Boston Red Sox fans, sparking widespread speculation and concern.

In mid-June, the Boston Red Sox made a surprising move by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Devers, a 28-year-old considered one of the top hitters in the major leagues, was seen as a key player in his prime, making the trade a shock to fans and experts alike. According to Craig Breslow, the Red Sox’s Chief Baseball Officer, the decision was motivated by a need to free payroll funds that could be directed toward strengthening the team overall.

Breslow addressed the trade and its implications during a NESN pregame show, emphasizing that although the move created additional financial flexibility, it does not by itself ensure that third baseman Alex Bregman will sign an extension with Boston.

Team Strategy and Payroll Management Beyond the Trade

Craig Breslow highlighted that payroll flexibility offers the team more options, but cautioned that money alone isn’t the sole factor for improving the roster.

“The trade deadline is not free agency, and dollars alone don’t represent the best currency to improve the team,”

Breslow explained. He also noted that the Red Sox must consider the farm system and weigh the potential need to exchange future prospects for immediate victories, signaling a complex balancing act between present success and long-term planning.

Regarding Alex Bregman’s future in Boston, Breslow praised the star player’s contributions both on and off the field.

“Alex has been great, he’s more than what we could have asked for, and also in the clubhouse. Right now, we’re focused on doing everything we can to bring him back on the field,”

Breslow said. He added that discussions about a possible extension will happen at the right time, suggesting no immediate decisions are expected.

Importance of Retaining Alex Bregman for Postseason Aspirations

Alex Bregman’s role remains critical as the Red Sox aim to break their postseason drought, which has lasted since 2021. Before a quad injury sidelined him in late May, Bregman had compiled a solid .299 batting average alongside 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season. His consistency has been vital for the team’s offensive efforts.

Fans remain hopeful the Red Sox can retain Bregman past the trade deadline to maintain their competitiveness and increase their chances of returning to the playoffs this year. The team’s performance and management decisions over the coming months will likely determine whether Boston can end the frustration of missing the postseason for multiple years.
