Lewis Hamilton has not dismissed the idea of a sequel to the successful F1: The Movie, but he advised against moving too quickly on it. Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion emphasized that hastening the production would be
“the worst thing [they] could probably do.”
The original film, starring Brad Pitt, has proven hugely popular, becoming Apple’s top box office success by earning $144 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Hamilton played a key role as co-producer and consultant, working closely with director Joe Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, with filming taking place at multiple Grand Prix venues throughout 2023 and 2024.
Development and challenges behind the first film
Hamilton described the film’s production as a lengthy and demanding process that took four years. He highlighted the sacrifices made, particularly by Kosinski, who spent extended periods away from his family. Hamilton suggested it’s important to let the project settle and be appreciated before considering another installment.
“We literally just finished it, so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel,” Hamilton told reporters.
“It’s been four years in the making. It was a lot of work, particularly for Joe [Kosinski]. It’s time away from your family, it’s time away from your kids, and also you need this to just simmer for a while, you know. Like, let’s enjoy it.” —Lewis Hamilton, F1 World Champion
Patience preferred over rushing a sequel
Hamilton expressed concern that rushing another film could harm its quality and the team behind it. He pointed out that many sequels tend to underperform compared to their predecessors.
“Most sequels are way worse, so we don’t need to rush it,” he remarked, then added, “I think if we do a sequel, I would say let’s really, really take our time in getting it even better.” —Lewis Hamilton, F1 World Champion
Continued involvement behind the scenes
Despite the film wrapping up, Hamilton remains actively engaged in the project’s evolution by sharing his Formula 1 expertise with the filmmakers. He has suggested adopting practices from F1 teams to improve their workflow.

“I don’t know if they’ve ever done this before, but I’ve asked them to do a debrief,” Hamilton revealed, referring to post-race reviews common in Formula 1.
“Let’s review what we did, what we could have done better. I don’t know if they ever do that in the movie business, but it’s something obviously I’ve learned from here.” —Lewis Hamilton, F1 World Champion
F1 community’s presence in the film
Hamilton was heavily involved in scripting and development, serving as a bridge between the filmmakers and the F1 paddock. The film also features cameos from several prominent figures within the sport, including team principals Zak Brown, Toto Wolff, and Fred Vasseur, adding authenticity to the portrayal of the racing world.
Importance of measured progress for the franchise
While the success of F1: The Movie has sparked discussions of a sequel, Hamilton’s cautious stance suggests that the production team aims to preserve the quality and reputation established by the first film. Balancing the eagerness of fans with the demands of delivering a compelling follow-up will likely shape how the project develops in the future.
The next steps may involve more reflective planning and creative refinement, ensuring that any sequel lives up to expectations and maintains the connection to the sport that made the original such a hit.
