Mac McClung parts ways with Orlando Magic, pursuing new opportunities as unrestricted free agent after withdrawal.

The Orlando Magic have officially withdrawn their two-way qualifying offer to guard Mac McClung, enabling him to become an unrestricted free agent, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac. This move opens up new opportunities for McClung to explore options beyond the Magic without the limitations of restricted free agency.

Reasons Behind McClung’s Contract Withdrawal

Keith Smith reports that Orlando pulled the qualifying offer to allow McClung to seek playing time elsewhere since the team’s backcourt is crowded, and his chances to secure consistent minutes appeared limited. Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel confirmed this development, emphasizing the Magic’s intent to provide McClung freedom to pursue his career.

McClung’s Performance and Career Overview

During the past season, Mac McClung was on a two-way contract with Orlando but appeared in only two brief NBA games. He spent most of his time with the Osceola Magic of the NBA G League, where he made 44 appearances. McClung averaged 23.0 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 32.4 minutes per game, shooting .481 from the field, .344 from three-point range, and .828 from the free-throw line.

At 26 years old, McClung earned first-team All-NBAGL honors for the 2024/25 season and was named G League MVP the previous year. He is widely recognized for clinching the NBA dunk contest title for three consecutive years. Despite limited NBA game experience, McClung has accumulated three seasons in the league with stints at the Bulls, Lakers, and Sixers.

Implications for the Magic’s Roster and McClung’s Next Steps

With Ethan Thompson currently the only player on a two-way contract, Orlando still holds two open slots for two-way deals. McClung remains eligible for another two-way contract this season but now has the freedom to explore other teams. This move could allow him a better chance to find a role with more NBA playing time moving forward.
