The San Jose Sharks strengthened their defensive lineup on Thursday by adding seasoned defensemen Dmitry Orlov and Nick Leddy, moves that pushed the team’s salary commitments above the NHL minimum floor. These acquisitions come shortly after the start of the NHL free agency period and reflect the Sharks’ efforts to balance youth with veteran leadership.
San Jose Sharks Add Experience to Defense Corps
Dmitry Orlov agreed to a two-year contract worth $6.5 million annually, joining the Sharks after a 13-year career spanning the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and Carolina Hurricanes. Orlov, who recorded six goals and 22 assists in 76 games last season with Carolina, brings 327 points over 867 NHL games. His proven playoff experience and Stanley Cup championship make him a key veteran addition to San Jose’s roster.
General Manager Mike Grier remarked on Orlov’s arrival, saying,
“Dmitry is a strong, two-way defenseman who brings physicality and versatility on the ice,”
and added,
“He has a wealth of NHL experience, both in the regular season and playoffs, and his Stanley Cup championship pedigree is a valuable addition to our team. We are happy to have him.”
Nick Leddy Joins Sharks via Waivers
Nick Leddy, a 34-year-old defenseman, was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues. Leddy carries a $4 million average annual value for the 2025-26 season. With this acquisition, the Sharks increased their total salary by $10.5 million on Thursday, surpassing the $70.60 million salary floor mandated by the league. Currently, the team sits at $72.55 million for the upcoming season, second-lowest in the NHL.
Leddy’s NHL career spans 15 seasons with stops at the New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Blues. Last season, he appeared in 31 games, tallying two goals and three assists. Over his extensive career, Leddy has amassed 416 points in 1,042 games and brings invaluable depth and leadership to the Sharks’ defense.
Enhancing Leadership for a Young, Promising Team
While the Sharks have focused on developing a talented, youthful core, the team has one of the youngest rosters in the NHL. Integrating veterans like Orlov and Leddy, both Stanley Cup champions, is a strategic move to inject experience and guidance into the lineup. Their presence is expected to help the developing players mature and improve the team’s overall competitiveness.
By fortifying their defense with these two accomplished players, the Sharks demonstrate a thoughtful approach to balancing potential and seasoned know-how, aiming to make a stronger push in the upcoming NHL season.
