Riley Greene Sparks Detroit Tigers Breakout with Historic Milestone Ahead of Playoffs
Riley Greene's breakout fuels Detroit Tigers' playoff surge, shining with career highs and All-Star accolades in 2024.

Riley Greene, now in his fourth major-league season with the Detroit Tigers, has emerged as a key figure in the team‘s resurgence during the 2024 <a href="https://www.buzzineintl.com/category/baseball/mlb/”>MLB season. Since debuting in June 2022 as a promising 21-year-old, Greene’s continued development has led to a historic achievement before the playoffs, underscoring his critical role in the Tigers’ success.

Selected fifth overall in the 2019 MLB Draft from Paul J. Haggerty High School, Greene spent two impressive seasons excelling in the minor leagues before joining Detroit’s major league roster. Each year in the majors, his performance has steadily improved, culminating in a breakthrough 2024 campaign. This season, Greene earned his first All-Star selection by producing career-best numbers over 137 games, including 24 home runs, 74 RBIs, and an .827 OPS, helping the Tigers secure their first postseason berth since 2014.

In a historic announcement ahead of their game against the Cleveland Guardians, the Tigers revealed that Greene had joined an elite group of franchise hitters.

“Riley Greene is the third Tiger in franchise history to reach 21 doubles, 21 homers, 69 RBI, and 42 extra-base hits by the All-Star Break. The others: Miguel Cabrera in 2010 and Hank Greenberg in 1935,”

the team stated.

Greene has maintained his upward trend in 2024, earning his second consecutive All-Star nod. By the All-Star break, he has already hit 21 home runs, just three shy of his previous career best, while maintaining a .292 batting average and an .890 OPS over 86 games. These statistics reflect a notable power surge and consistent offensive production.

Thanks to Greene’s contributions, the Tigers hold a 54–34 record and lead the American League Central by 12.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. Detroit also boasts the best record in the entire American League as the team pushes confidently toward the postseason.

Riley Greene’s rapid ascent and historic performance mark a pivotal moment not just for his career but for the Tigers’ future. As Detroit prepares for the playoffs, Greene’s role as a cornerstone player signals optimism and strong potential for continued success in the years ahead.
