Aliyah Boston’s final shot miss cost the Indiana Fever a crucial victory on Saturday night, as they fell 89-87 to the Los Angeles Sparks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The close contest marked the Fever’s ninth loss of the season after winning three consecutive games without star Caitlin Clark.
Crucial Moments Define Tight Game Against Los Angeles Sparks
The game was tightly contested throughout, with the turning point coming when Sparks’ Rickea Jackson sank a short jumper, giving her team an 88-87 lead. The score stayed that way until the final seconds, when Azurá Stevens added a free throw to extend the Sparks’ advantage to 89-87.
With possession in the final three seconds, Boston received the ball at the top of the key, taking the last shot after a dribble forward in what seemed to be a planned play by coach Stephanie White. Her midrange attempt bounced off the front rim, sealing the defeat for Indiana.
Stephanie White Reflects on Boston’s Final Attempt
In the postgame press conference, White offered insight on Boston’s late-game shot, explaining that despite the defensive pressure, Boston had a solid opportunity.
“Sometimes when teams play with that physicality and play with that length, it causes you to rush a little bit,” White said. “AB had a really good look at the end… And sometimes it doesn’t just fall your way.” —Stephanie White, Indiana Fever Coach
Boston’s Strong Performance Not Enough to Secure Win
Boston led the team with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, complemented by 12 rebounds and four assists. Natasha Howard also had a notable night with 21 points and nine rebounds. However, the combined 74 points from Sparks players Jackson, Stevens, Kelsey Plum, and Dearica Hamby proved decisive in the outcome.
Fever Prepare for Next Home Game Amid Challenging Season
Following this narrow loss, the Fever aim to rebound in the next home game on Wednesday, hosting the Golden State Valkyries led by Kate Martin. This will be the third game in a five-game home stand for Indiana as they fight to improve their record this season.
