Sophie Cunningham Reacts Calmly After Neck Grab Incident in Indiana Fever Game Against Sparks
Sophie Cunningham shines in Indiana Fever's game against Los Angeles Sparks, securing crucial plays despite aggressive defense.

The Indiana Fever, still missing their star Caitlin Clark who has been sidelined for ten games in 2025, were focused on securing their 10th victory of the WNBA season. On Saturday, the Fever (9-8) faced off against the Los Angeles Sparks for the second time this year, hosting the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Julie Vanloo’s Active Role in Sparks’ Game Plan

Julie Vanloo, newly signed by the Sparks after being waived by the Golden State Valkyries, played significantly more minutes against the Fever compared to her brief two-minute appearance in the Sparks’ recent win over the Liberty. During the first quarter, with just 1:25 remaining, Vanloo delivered an aggressive play by diving for a loose ball against Indiana’s Sophie Cunningham.

Controversial Neck Grab Incident During Early Play

Both players reached for the ball simultaneously, resulting in Vanloo grabbing Cunningham by the neck while they were on the floor. Despite the contact, referees did not call a foul, instead ruling the situation a jump ball. After they stood up, Vanloo appeared to exchange words with Cunningham in a friendly manner, which Cunningham met with a smile and laugh, showing no animosity.

Key Moments Following the Jump Ball

Cunningham won possession from the jump ball but was fouled shortly after by Vanloo, leading to two free throws—Cunningham made one. The Sparks quickly answered back when Vanloo hit a long-range three-pointer eleven seconds later to give Los Angeles a 21-20 lead.

Vanloo’s Journey in the WNBA and Recent Challenges

Since debuting in 2024 with the Washington Mystics, where she averaged 7.4 points and 4.3 assists, Vanloo has moved between teams, including being picked by the Golden State Valkyries in the December expansion draft. After nine games with Golden State, averaging 4.6 points and 4.1 assists, she was unexpectedly released last week before joining the Sparks.

Cunningham’s Composure Highlights Sportsmanship

Despite the rough play and the neck grab incident, Sophie Cunningham’s calm reaction demonstrated professionalism and restraint throughout the game. The incident did not spark any retaliation, reflecting Cunningham’s focus on performance rather than provocation. This attitude may serve her and the team well as they push toward a decisive win in Clark’s absence.
