Caitlin Clark's former teammate, Kate Martin, celebrated alongside Iowa coach Jan Jensen at her WNBA game against the Lynx.

Iowa head coach Jan Jensen showed support for Kate Martin, a former Hawkeye who played alongside Caitlin Clark for four seasons. On Saturday, before the WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and the Minnesota Lynx, Jensen highlighted Martin’s presence by sharing a pregame warmup photo of her on Instagram.

Kate Martin, now with the Golden State Valkyries, recently scored a career-high 21 points against the New York Liberty. During the Saturday game at Target Center in Minneapolis, she played 15 minutes and recorded five points along with two rebounds, although the Valkyries fell 82-71 to the Lynx.

Kate Martin’s Journey From Iowa to the WNBA

Originally from Illinois, Martin spent six years with the University of Iowa basketball program while Jan Jensen served as associate coach under Lisa Bluder. Following her collegiate career, Martin was selected in the second round of last year’s WNBA draft by the Las Vegas Aces. After one season, she moved to Golden State, continuing her professional development alongside her former Hawkeye teammate Caitlin Clark, who was the top pick going to the Indiana Fever.

Jan Jensen Attends Game and Shares Special Moment

In addition to sending supportive messages, Jan Jensen attended the WNBA game in Minneapolis to watch Martin compete in person. After the match, which marked Jensen’s second season as Iowa head coach, she posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing herself with Martin. Jensen was seen wearing Martin’s No. 20 Iowa jersey, symbolizing their meaningful connection.

Alongside Martin and Clark, Lucy Olsen also made the jump to the WNBA this year, being drafted 23rd overall by the Washington Mystics, a testament to Jensen’s role in developing professional-level talent within the Iowa program.

Reflecting on Martin and Clark’s Impact at Iowa

Kate Martin fondly remembers Caitlin Clark’s rapid rise during their time together at Iowa. Martin once said of Clark,

“She came in and ruled the world”

—Kate Martin, Former Iowa Teammate. This sentiment highlights the remarkable influence Clark had on the team and the close bond they share.

Jensen’s ongoing connection with her former players and her presence at significant moments like this game demonstrates the strong culture and supportive environment cultivated at Iowa, which continues to shape promising athletes as they transition to professional careers.
