Brad Keselowski’s RFK Racing is steadily working to reclaim its status as a top competitor in NASCAR, but the team recently faced a significant setback by losing Steve Newmark, its president for 15 years. Newmark will soon join the University of North Carolina as an Executive Associate Athletic Director, departing just as RFK Racing aims to rebuild under Keselowski’s leadership. Despite this challenge, Keselowski remains composed about the team’s future.
Keselowski acknowledges that NASCAR organizations undergo constant changes, saying,
“Whether it be drivers, crew chiefs, or executives. You just hope that the time people spend in your organization is good for them and good for you. I think there is a lot to be said for that with Steve.”
RFK Racing currently supports three drivers—Keselowski himself, Ryan Preece, and Chris Buescher—working toward stabilizing and growing the team’s competitive edge.
Keselowski’s Approach to Replacing the Departing President
While the loss of Newmark comes at a critical point, Keselowski assures that he is not rushing to appoint a successor. He highlighted the team’s strong position with secured contracts for drivers, crew chiefs, and most key staff, enabling a patient approach to hiring.
“We are still working through that. We are not in a rush. We are in such a great spot. All our major contracts are locked up with drivers and crew chiefs, and most of our people. We have a few small sponsor contracts, but most of our big ones are locked up. So, we feel really good about taking our time and seeing what comes to us,”
Keselowski explained.
This cautious strategy emphasizes maintaining stability amid the transition and focusing on long-term success as RFK Racing continues its rebuild. Keselowski’s calm stance contrasts with the abrupt departure of a key team leader, signaling confidence in the organization’s foundation.
Steve Newmark’s Vision for NASCAR’s Future Direction
Though no longer part of RFK Racing’s leadership, Newmark shared his aspirations for NASCAR’s development during a recent Backstretch Banter episode. He expressed excitement about expanding the sport internationally, particularly mentioning Brazil as a promising location due to its rich motorsport history.
“I’ve heard Brazil thrown out on a number of occasions. Selfishly, from a personal perspective, I think it’d be a lot of fun to go down to Brazil. Obviously, they have got a long heritage of motorsports down there. That’d be fun,”
Newmark said.
He also noted interest from regions like the Middle East in hosting NASCAR events, which he believes signals positive growth for the sport.
“To me, a lot of these locations that are being talked, you hear the Middle East would love to host a race. Again, I am not on the inside of those discussions. I get a lot of it from our team presidents’ meeting or when NASCAR shares information. But I think those are all good signs for the sport,”
Newmark added.
Despite aiming to broaden NASCAR’s global reach, Newmark emphasized the importance of keeping traditional U.S. fans engaged, underscoring the balance required as the sport evolves.
