Why Jalen Ramsey’s Return to Rams Failed as Dolphins Ship Star CB to Steelers

Jalen Ramsey was traded by the Miami Dolphins on Monday, concluding a much-discussed chapter involving the veteran cornerback. Despite Tyreek Hill’s efforts to keep Ramsey in Miami, the Dolphins completed a trade sending him to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for three-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a pick swap. This transaction marked another shift in Ramsey’s NFL journey, emphasizing the ongoing strategic moves around key defensive players.

Before finalizing the deal with the Steelers, Ramsey had been linked to several teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and notably the Los Angeles Rams. Ramsey previously played for the Rams, where he earned a Super Bowl victory, before signing with the Dolphins. There had been speculation about a possible return to SoFi Stadium, but Ramsey reportedly declined to rejoin the Rams.

During a Thursday appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, NFL insider Tom Pelissero shed light on why the Rams were unable to pursue Ramsey aggressively, citing financial constraints.

“There were on-and-off talks, Rich, for weeks prior to this and part of the question was within the league, ‘Would Jalen Ramsey ultimately accept a trade to go to Pittsburgh?’”

Pelissero said.

“He had never played in a cold-weather climate before.”

“Of course, Jalen had his thumb on the scale in the previous trades when he went from Jacksonville to the Rams and from the Rams to Miami. There was a thought that LA was the most likely destination, but the Rams just didn’t really have the cash and cap to pay Jalen Ramsey the full amount that he was due.”

Ramsey appeared in 27 games over two seasons with the Dolphins, accumulating 82 tackles, one sack, and five interceptions totaling 59 yards. The acquisition of Ramsey gives the Steelers another experienced defender, complementing recent moves such as trading for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as Pittsburgh looks to strengthen its roster for a playoff push.

Colin Cowherd Critiques Steelers’ Defensive Spending After Ramsey Trade

While the trade was viewed by some as a strategic upgrade for Pittsburgh, sports analyst Colin Cowherd voiced criticism regarding the Steelers’ focus on defense following the acquisition of Ramsey. On Monday’s episode of his show The Herd, Cowherd expressed skepticism about head coach Mike Tomlin’s spending decisions.

“So the Steelers can’t stop spending money on defense,”

Cowherd said.

“So this morning, what do you know, bounce around the league guy Jalen Ramsey, 26 and a half million dollars, the Steelers went and got him. Now, they did move off of Minkah Fitzpatrick.”

“But Minkah is low-maintenance, seven million dollars a year cheaper, a leader in the room, not a bounce round the league guy, so the Steelers can’t help themselves.”

The Dolphins and Steelers both enter the Week 15 matchup on December 15 with renewed expectations following this active offseason of trades and signings. The game in Pittsburgh will be closely watched as each team tests its revamped lineups in a critical contest for playoff positioning.
