Nico Hulkenberg ended his longstanding streak of Formula 1 starts without a podium by securing third place at the British Grand Prix, a feat that took him 239 races. This milestone means the unwanted record for the most starts without stepping on an F1 podium now belongs to fellow German and former Force India driver Adrian Sutil.
Sutil competed in 128 Grand Prix events from 2007 to 2014 but never managed to finish in the top three despite delivering several strong performances. His career was largely spent with teams struggling to challenge at the front, limiting his chances to contend for podium finishes.
Career Journey of Adrian Sutil in Formula 1
Originating from Bavaria, Germany, Adrian Sutil began his Formula 1 career as a test driver for Midland in 2006. The following year, he was promoted to a race seat when Midland transitioned to Spyker, and he remained with the team through its further evolution into Force India under Vijay Mallya’s ownership. Sutil’s time with the Silverstone-based squad is the period for which he is most recognized.
During Force India’s gradual rise in competitiveness, Sutil became a regular points scorer and achieved his highest championship ranking of ninth place in 2011. Despite this, he rarely appeared near the front of the pack, recording only four finishes inside the top five throughout his F1 career.

Near-Podium Performances and Career Challenges
One of Sutil’s closest attempts at a podium was at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Equipped with a low-downforce setup similar to teammate Giancarlo Fisichella’s—which had helped Fisichella to pole and second place in Belgium two weeks earlier—Sutil qualified on the front row and finished a strong fourth, just half a second behind Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari, who took third.
His career took a downturn after the 2011 season due to a legal incident involving an altercation with Lotus F1 team executive Eric Lux at a Shanghai nightclub. This resulted in Sutil being replaced at Force India by Nico Hulkenberg and receiving an 18-month suspended sentence along with a €200,000 fine.
Return and Final Years in Formula 1
Following the resolution of his legal issues, Sutil returned to Formula 1 in 2013, reclaiming a Force India seat vacated by Hulkenberg, who had moved to Sauber. However, Sutil struggled to compete against teammate Paul di Resta and lost his race spot at the season’s end.
In another switch, Sutil joined Sauber in 2014 while Hulkenberg returned to Force India, which had by then evolved into Aston Martin. Unfortunately, Sauber endured an extremely difficult season under the new hybrid regulations, failing to score any points with Sutil or rookie Esteban Gutierrez in the lineup.
After being dropped at the close of 2014, Sutil served briefly as a reserve driver for Williams in 2015 but never returned to active racing in Formula 1. Since then, he has mostly remained away from the public eye, with only a short stint in the Ferrari Challenge Europe during 2022–23 marking his return to competitive motorsport since his F1 career ended.
Life Beyond the Track
Outside of racing, Adrian Sutil is known for his extensive collection of supercars, including notable vehicles like a McLaren Senna LM and a Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, highlighting his passion for high-performance automobiles beyond his Formula 1 tenure.
“It took Hulkenberg 239 attempts to stand on a Formula 1 podium, but his Silverstone heroics have lifted the weight of the most starts without a podium tag, a blemish on what has otherwise been a highly-respected career for the German.”
