The New York Rangers acquired 22-year-old defenseman Scott Morrow from the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade that also involved sending K’Andre Miller to Carolina in exchange for multiple draft picks. With his evident talent and offensive capabilities, Morrow has the potential to become a key contributor to the Rangers’ defense this season.
Scott Morrow’s Development as a Promising Defense Prospect
Scott Morrow was selected by the Hurricanes in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft and quickly made a name for himself at the collegiate level. During his freshman year at UMass-Amherst in 2021-22, he recorded 13 goals and 20 assists across 37 games, showcasing confidence with the puck and a knack for joining offensive rushes. He maintained strong offensive production as a sophomore in 2022-23, achieving nine goals and 22 assists while also blocking 45 shots. In his junior season, Morrow tallied six goals, 24 assists, and increased his shot blocking to 35 in 37 games.
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 210 pounds, Morrow combines ideal size with a long reach. His offensive skill set includes a solid shot and quick puck handling, enabling him to beat defenders consistently one-on-one while at UMass-Amherst. Although primarily recognized for his offense, he possesses the necessary tools to develop further on the defensive side.

Following his junior season, Morrow made his professional debut with the Hurricanes, appearing in two NHL games. He spent the majority of last season with the Chicago Wolves, Carolina’s American Hockey League affiliate, where he continued to impress by registering 13 goals and 26 assists over 52 games. Late in the NHL season, Morrow was called back up and scored his first NHL goal during a 5-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 15. Although his ice time was limited and he finished the regular season with one goal and five assists in 14 games, he gained valuable postseason experience by playing in all five Eastern Conference Final games against the Florida Panthers, averaging just over ten minutes per game.
The New York Rangers’ Defensive Challenges and Morrow’s Role
The Rangers faced difficulties last season in pairing their star defenseman, Adam Fox, effectively. To address this, they signed left-handed defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a long-term, seven-year contract worth $49 million. However, the team still lacks clarity around their second- and third-pair defensive pairings. Right-handed defensemen Scott Morrow, Will Borgen, and Braden Schneider, along with left-handed defensemen Carson Soucy, Urho Vaakanainen, and Matthew Robertson, make up the group competing for those roles. Schneider performed well playing on his off-side last season and could pair with Borgen on the second pair, which would open a spot on the third pair potentially for Morrow alongside Soucy or Vaakanainen.
While Fox remains the team’s offensive leader from the back end, the Rangers have struggled to find other defensemen who can consistently contribute offensively. Morrow’s energetic style and offensive instincts give him the chance to add scoring depth and play a role on the second power-play unit. Last season, Miller was the only defenseman besides Fox to provide meaningful offense, finishing with 27 points. If Morrow can play smart defense while leveraging his offensive skills, he could become a valuable asset on the third pair.
Scott Morrow’s Potential Impact on the Rangers’ Future
Morrow is a strong candidate to make the Rangers’ roster at the start of the season and contribute immediately. Beyond short-term help, he has the physical attributes and skill set to develop into a dependable NHL defenseman. The key for Morrow will be steady growth and consistent performance as he adapts to the rigors of the NHL game.
