Matvei Michkov has finally spoken about the comment Alex Ovechkin made in February, when after a close 4-3 win by Washington over Philadelphia, Ovechkin remarked that Michkov should “show off a little less.” During that game, Michkov scored twice and nearly completed a hat trick with an attempt in the style of Michigan goals. The interaction sparked conversation due to Ovechkin’s straightforward tone.
Although Michkov had not immediately replied to the remark, he did so in a recent interview with Match TV, admitting he had not seen Ovechkin’s quote but understood the message behind it.
Michkov Acknowledges the Need for Hard Work Over Flashiness
Michkov responded calmly yet firmly to the criticism, agreeing that showing off is unnecessary in hockey and emphasizing the importance of dedication and effort. He conveyed that no one should enter the league feeling less worthy than established stars.
“I haven’t seen his quote,” Michkov said. “But where is Ovechkin wrong? Yes, no one needs to show off. You need to work.”
“You can’t enter the league with the idea that there are stars playing there, and you are a nobody,” Michkov said. “That doesn’t help. You just need to go out on the ice, and do what you can do.”
Notable Season for Michkov Despite Calder Trophy Loss
Michkov experienced an impressive rookie campaign during the 2024-25 NHL season, appearing in 80 games for the Philadelphia Flyers. He tallied 26 goals and contributed 37 assists, amassing a total of 63 points. Although he did not win the Calder Trophy, which went to Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, Michkov finished fourth in the voting with 645 points. His performance established him as one of the league’s top rookies.
Reflecting on that February game when Ovechkin made his comment, Michkov said,
“It’s not every day you play against stars like Ovechkin,” Michkov said. “It’s a pity we didn’t get a chance to talk.”
Recognition and Continued Development Highlight Michkov’s Progress
In June, Michkov was named to the 2024-25 NHL All-Rookie Team, joining an elite group as only the 11th Flyer to earn the distinction. He led all rookies in goals scored and overtime goals, becoming the first Philadelphia rookie since the 1993-94 season to reach 60 points. Throughout the season, Michkov recorded three games with three points and was twice honored as NHL Rookie of the Month, in both October and February.
Recently, Michkov scored two goals during the KHL 3-on-3 Fest, helping Team Orange secure a victory with calm and precise finishes. This followed the Flyers Development Camp, where his focus has already shifted to preparing for the upcoming NHL training camp. Coaches are expected to evaluate how he integrates with his teammates as he continues his development for next season.
