Alex Bregman has integrated well with the Boston Red Sox since joining through free agency, but questions remain about his tenure through the 2025 season. Given the upcoming MLB trade deadline, the possibility of Bregman being traded is gaining attention, especially since no contract extension talks have been confirmed between him and the Red Sox.
Bregman’s current deal, a three-year, $120 million contract, contains opt-out clauses following the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This structure has raised speculation about Boston’s willingness to trade their All-Star third baseman to avoid losing him for nothing after the contract ends if an extension is not reached before July 31.
No Formal Extension Discussions Have Begun
Rob Bradford from WEEI reported that there have been no formal negotiations between the Red Sox and Bregman regarding a contract extension. When asked about the extension talks on WEEI’s Greg Hill Show, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow provided a measured response about the situation.
I think ‘ongoing’ is always a fair summary, given this is something on our mind and it’s something on Alex’s mind,
Breslow said.
I’ve been pretty outspoken about what he’s provided on the field and in the clubhouse. He’s a guy we would like to have here in a Red Sox uniform for a long time.
These remarks suggest that while discussions remain open, no concrete progress has been announced publicly at this time.
Bregman’s Performance and Injury Impact
Before a quad injury sidelined him in May, Bregman was an early contender for the American League MVP award. He posted an impressive .299 batting average, .385 on-base percentage, and .553 slugging percentage, hitting 11 home runs and recording 35 RBIs to earn his third All-Star selection of his career. Despite missing significant time, his leadership and presence have remained influential in the Red Sox clubhouse.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed on Thursday that Bregman is expected to rejoin the active roster ahead of the All-Star break. Bregman is anticipated to participate in at least two of Boston’s upcoming three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays from Friday through Sunday.
Trade Deadline Speculation Intensifies
With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, Bregman’s contractual status is gaining increased attention. Major sports outlets like ESPN have included him among MLB’s top trade candidates if the Red Sox and Bregman cannot finalize an extension. Boston’s front office faces a critical choice: secure Bregman long-term or consider trading him to receive value rather than risk his departure in free agency.
This situation reflects the broader challenges teams face in balancing player retention with roster flexibility at key points in the season, particularly for players who are both impactful on the field and valuable within clubhouse dynamics.
