Brandon Lowe, now in his eighth season with the Tampa Bay Rays, was drafted in the third round of the 2015 MLB Draft and began his major league career in 2018. The 31-year-old second baseman quickly made a name for himself after a breakout year in 2019, when he earned his first All-Star selection and finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting despite injuries that sidelined him for much of the season’s latter half.
Lowe continued to perform at a high level in 2020 and 2021, ranking among the top 10 in AL MVP voting both years. However, ongoing health issues have hindered his ability to play consistently, as he has appeared in less than 60 percent of Rays games over the past three seasons.
2025 Season and Recent Injury Update
This year, Lowe started strong and was rewarded with his second All-Star nod. Unfortunately, due to left oblique tightness, he has missed four consecutive games, leading Tampa Bay to place him on the 10-day injured list effective July 8. Should Lowe recover quickly, he could return to the lineup for Tampa Bay’s first game after the All-Star break against the Baltimore Orioles.
Despite Lowe’s absence, the Rays have struggled recently, dropping seven of their last ten games and holding a 50-45 record. Nevertheless, Tampa Bay remains firmly in control of its Wild Card position in the American League.
Lowe’s Impact on the Team and Outlook Moving Forward
Through 84 games this season, Brandon Lowe has posted a .272 batting average with 19 home runs, 50 RBIs, and an .811 OPS—his best offensive output since he last played a full season in 2021. His power hitting has been instrumental to the Rays’ success this year, making his recovery and return a critical factor as the team heads into the second half of the season.
