Calvin Austin III, wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is aiming to become a key target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the 2024 season. Known for his exceptional straight-line speed, Austin was drafted in the middle rounds and is now entering the final year of his rookie contract with ambitions to secure a starting role. Beyond speed, he has been making a strong impression on Rodgers with his ability to make challenging catches over the middle of the field.
Developing More Than Just Speed
Austin’s skill set is expanding beyond his trademark speed, as Rodgers has taken notice of his versatility. During an interview with Action News 5 in Memphis, Austin shared that Rodgers highlighted his speed at their first meeting but also emphasized the importance of making tough middle–field catches. Austin explained that he worked hard on these kinds of receptions last season to show he can contribute more than just deep-threat plays.
The first time I met [Aaron Rodgers], one of the first things he said was about my speed
, Austin said.
Obviously, that’s my main thing. It’s something that got me to the point I’m at today. But one of the other things he was talking about was me going over the middle to make those tough catches. That was something that I really worked on last year and wanted to show that I’m not just a straight down-the-field speed guy
.

Coaching Staff’s Confidence and Team Changes
The Steelers’ wide receiver coach, Zach Azzanni, recently named Austin as his No. 2 receiver going into camp. Though that positioning could change with offseason moves, it indicates strong confidence in Austin’s abilities. The Steelers added tight end Jonnu Smith, who can also fulfill some wide receiver duties, which might impact formations and receiver deployment. Meanwhile, Austin continues preparing to demonstrate his worth across multiple roles on the offense.
Proving Toughness and Reliability in Crucial Situations
Despite his smaller frame, Austin is determined to show resilience and toughness, particularly on difficult plays in critical moments. He wants Rodgers and the team to view him as a dependable target during high-pressure situations, especially third downs and middle–field catches that can swing the momentum of games.
Tough third downs, across the middle, I’m the guy that can make those catches and show up in those big, crucial moments’, Austin said. That’s where you earn your stripes. That’s where you earn the respect of your quarterback, the team, the coaches, when you make those catches
.
Slot Role and Offensive Flexibility
Austin spent much of the spring training working in the slot position, though the Steelers might adjust their offensive personnel groupings to include more tight ends like Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth. Regardless of the alignment, Austin is prepared to fill any role Rodgers requires, aiming to be a flexible and reliable target throughout the offense.
Statistical Evidence of Austin’s Versatility and Effectiveness
Data from Pro Football Focus highlights Austin’s strong performance on passes targeted over the middle of the field last season. He caught 18 out of 24 such passes, including four of seven deep passes with two touchdowns, five of seven intermediate routes with one touchdown, and nine of ten short routes. PFF also credited him with three contested catches on deep throws, reflecting his ability to win tough battles for the ball. These grades suggest that Austin’s skills align well with the type of receiver Rodgers needs to succeed.
Preseason Preparation and Rodgers’ Approach
Recently, Austin joined teammates on a training trip to Malibu, working closely with Aaron Rodgers before the official start of training camp. He reflected on Rodgers’ coaching style, noting that the quarterback encourages players to express their football abilities freely. This mutual trust could be crucial as Austin looks to take on a larger role in Rodgers’ offense.
Looking Ahead to a Potential Breakout Season
In his third NFL season, Austin compiled 36 receptions for 548 yards and four touchdowns. With increased opportunities, especially if he continues to show toughness on critical catches for Rodgers, he has the potential to significantly boost these numbers. This could come at an ideal time, as Austin approaches the final year of his rookie contract and looks to establish himself as a core receiver for the Steelers.
