As Russell Westbrook navigates the 2024 free agency period, it appears the Sacramento Kings are unlikely to extend an offer, despite holding respect for the former MVP. The Kings’ general manager Scott Perry and the organization have expressed admiration for Westbrook, but their already stacked backcourt presents a significant obstacle to signing him.
During an appearance on Sactown Sports 1140’s The Carmichael Dave Show, The Athletic’s Sam Amick explained that the Kings have strong positive feelings toward Westbrook; however, the recent acquisition of Dennis Schröder on a three-year, $45 million contract has filled much of the team’s guard rotation. Alongside Schröder, the Kings’ backcourt currently features Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, and Keon Ellis, making it difficult to create space for another veteran guard.

Instead, they managed to gain $5 million in cap room by trading Jonas Valančiūnas to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Dario Saric, enabling Schröder’s addition without parting with Monk.
Westbrook’s opportunities appear increasingly limited, as multiple teams have adjusted their rosters and guard lineups. Denver, which enjoyed Westbrook’s contributions in 75 games last season where he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per contest, recently added Cam Johnson and Bruce Brown. These moves suggest the Nuggets may no longer require Westbrook’s role coming off the bench.

The Milwaukee Bucks might represent one of the remaining teams considering adding an experienced guard. Their projected starting backcourt consists of Kevin Porter Jr. and Gary Trent Jr., and rumors indicate interest in veterans such as Westbrook, Chris Paul, and Malcolm Brogdon to bolster their lineup. The Bucks’ approach reflects a cautious search for seasoned guards who can provide stability and leadership.
