Aari McDonald, known for her quiet nature, has begun to emerge as a strong presence in the Indiana Fever lineup during the 2024 season. Originally joining the team on a hardship contract due to injuries to key players Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, she secured a spot on the roster after DeWanna Bonner’s release on June 25. Growing Up Competitive in Fresno, California
McDonald’s reserved demeanor contrasts with her competitive family background, as the youngest of six siblings in Fresno, CA. She recalled a childhood filled with fierce contests, where even shooting hoops involved stakes like push-ups for the loser.
“We used to have shooting competitions out in the yard, and [the punishment] was push-ups. You lose, you get those push-ups!”
she shared with a laugh.
“It was competitive, so it was like every man for themselves.”
This early environment helped shape McDonald’s drive and work ethic on the court.
Path to Professional Basketball: High School to the WNBA
McDonald made a mark at Brookside Christian High School, scoring 1,500 points in just two years before advancing to the University of Washington. There, she earned a place on the Pac-12 All Freshman Team playing alongside Kelsey Plum. Later, she transferred to the University of Arizona, leading the Wildcats to their first-ever national championship game appearance. Her collegiate success culminated in being drafted third overall by the Atlanta Dream in 2021. After a trade to the Los Angeles Sparks in 2024, McDonald found her way to the Fever, ready to contribute at the professional level.
Integrating into the Fever and Embracing Team Support
Since joining Indiana, McDonald has expressed how welcomed she feels by the entire organization.
“It feels good. I’m so excited to be back,”
she said.
“Like I said before, just [in] my short stint here, it felt like the place to be.”
She acknowledged the warmth of the franchise and how it has helped her grow personally and professionally. McDonald’s ability to adapt quickly has been important as she fills the gaps left by injured teammates.
Commitment Beyond the Court: Leading and Giving Back
Off the court, McDonald dedicates herself to coaching young players through an AAU squad based in Sacramento. The team benefits from a family-driven support system with her brother as coach and sister-in-law as manager, all backed by a coaching staff with Division I experience. McDonald described the players as “very coachable” and praised their strong family values. She makes a point to attend games as much as possible, even if it means frequent travel. For McDonald, investing in the next generation is a vital part of her identity.

Although initially shy, McDonald is steadily finding her voice within the Fever and beyond. Her teammate Sophie Cunningham joked about encouraging McDonald to relax during their conversations, highlighting the guard’s reserved nature. Yet, McDonald’s generosity and dedication are well-known qualities wherever she plays. As she continues to gain confidence and deliver strong performances, she stands out as a hard worker with immense talent, poised to be a key contributor for the Indiana Fever throughout the season.
