Since being traded to the San Francisco Giants last month, Rafael Devers has struggled to regain his usual form, reflecting a notable slump in his performance. The three-time All-Star is batting just .220/.350/.354 over 23 games with the Giants and has not hit a home run since June 26, raising questions about the impact of a possible injury on his season.
Giants manager Bob Melvin revealed on Friday that Devers is dealing with a disk injury in his lower back. Devers underwent an MRI on Thursday, and while the team does not expect him to miss any playing time, the injury seems to be affecting his performance on the field.
Manager’s Updates on Devers’ Health and Recovery
Melvin shared details about Devers’ condition following the MRI, noting that the slugger has begun medication and is showing signs of some improvement.
“He went on some medication, feels a little bit better today. We’ll see how he responds to that,”
Melvin said Friday.
“I’m glad we got the MRI done so we know what’s going on.”
Although Devers is participating in defensive drills, the back injury has delayed his anticipated transition to first base with the Giants.
Previous Injury and Performance Before Trade
Before joining San Francisco, Devers was not completely healthy, having played through a groin issue that affected his running early in the season with the Boston Red Sox. Despite that, his offensive numbers were strong, with 15 home runs and a .905 OPS across 73 games.

While Devers was on pace to be an American League All-Star starter, he did not make the National League roster with the Giants because Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber secured their spots. As a result, Devers is expected to use the upcoming All-Star break to rest and possibly avoid a stint on the injured list.
Impact of Injury on Playing Time and Upcoming Schedule
Melvin explained that Devers experiences the most discomfort while running and, to a lesser extent, at the plate.
“He feels it mostly running, probably a little bit at the plate, but not as much as when he’s running bases,”
Melvin said. He added,
“I think with the break hopefully (he’ll be OK). I think he’s been playing through it for a little bit, basically since he’s been here. It’s the reason he’s not out in the field right now.”
Currently, Devers is in the midst of a three-game hitless streak and has gone five games without recording an extra-base hit. Despite these challenges, the Giants do not appear to plan resting him during their important upcoming division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Outlook for Devers and Potential Effects on Giants’ Season
Devers’ ongoing injury and performance slump create uncertainty around his contribution during this critical phase of the season. His ability to recover during the All-Star break will be crucial for the Giants as they contend in a tight division race. Continued management of his back injury and controlled playing time may determine whether Devers can return to full form and provide the offensive firepower the Giants expected when they acquired him.
